I taught Teddie lay down as soon as he learned sit perfectly. I'd tell him to sit, would hold the treat in my hand and tell him lie down while touching the floor. He learned to lie down. Then I worked on him laying down without my pointing to the floor in front of him. He got it after a bit of head cocks and ears up episodes. It was definitely one of the tougher one's for him to do without hopping up and doing it over and over. Good luck.
