| 7 week pup Two days ago I received my Yorkie pup from a breeder I found in a newspaper, being a first time dog buyer I didn't realize that 7 weeks was far too young to take a pup from it's mother, however I guess it's too late to dwell on that now. I read through many posts on your forums and I was just hoping to clear up / verify some things and to hopefully get some advice too. Since we received the pup we've put him in a hamper with blankets in it to sleep, and I'm planning on picking up a create either today or tomorrow. Should I remove the pup from the hamper or is it fine for now? (He's sleeping in it at the moment, and we keep him in it at night) He's been eating the dog food that the breeders provided for us, I'm hoping someone could recommend that kind of food we should switch to (He's been eating the pellets okay, he has most of his teeth by now) We've been feeding him 3-4 times a day, and we take the bowl away after he's done eating. One of the main concerns I have is with it's social learning. Right now he's chewing on anything in sight, I only have balls right now for him to play with and he doesn't seem to be very interested in them. I was wondering how I should play with him, and how often, and when I should start taking him for walks. Thank you for taking the time to read this, I could really use some help |

| Oh cute!!! Congratulations on your new pup! I got my ZoE really young too (6 weeks) due to medical issues with the mom. She was a good size pup and I'd had yorkies before so her breeder let her go to me early. There are some issues with a younger pup..mainly feeding & socialization/biting. Make sure you keep feeding him at least 4 times a day while he's so young. It helps to keep his blood sugars stable. Get him some soft stuffed toys to chew on, a nylabone & a hard rubber chew toy like a Kong. Discourage him from biting your hands and when he does give him one of his toys to chew instead. It's alot easier to divert the biting now than it would be to try to train him to not bite your hands after doing it for weeks on end. A nicely padded hamper is fine for a day or two, as long as the sides are high enough that he can't climb over the top & hurt himself. I'd really recommend that you get a playpen to confine him. That way you'll have room to put a bed & pee pad & toys, and you'll have a safe place to leave him when you are gone from home. Don't take him for walks in public places until he's had all his shots. Playing inside is fine for now. Being so young, he'll tire quickly & take lots of naps.

| Thanks for the input! I'll try to get the toys as soon as possible, he seems to be biting everything in his sight and while he sleeps (maybe dreaming about biting me for separating him from his mother :P) Do you happen to have any advice on food? I currently have a bit of his previous food left and have a new bag of super premium dog food (First 3 ingredients are Chicken, chicken meal, brown rice) I haven't started switching him from the original feed, which I got in a plastic bag. |

| The usual advice is to start putting some of the new premium food in with the old food at each meal time, and over a few days, gradually increase the ratio of the new food to the old food. The hope is a slow transition lessens stomach upset. ZoE was exactly 6 weeks to the day when I got her & barely had any teeth through her gums and had great difficulty eating the kibble that came with her. Her vet had me get Royal Canin Mini Babydog and she loved it & was able to eat the tiny pieces. She transitioned to puppy food at about 10 weeks. If Snoopy is already able to eat his kibble, that is great

| Well Snoopy seems to pee near the training mat, however the pooping is a different story. Should I just let it slide until we can take him outside or let it slide. I was also wondering what age I should take him outside (1 month?) We're giving him shots next month. Also, is it strange for Yorkies to sit around with their eyes slightly open? He lays in his bed and it looks like he's sleeping, but when I look closer his eyes are slightly apart and he wakes up immediately. |

He's 7 weeks old right? (I'm assuming when you asked and typed 1 month you meant 2?) He can go outside in your own yard only and only if you have no other dogs that wander into it ever if it's not fenced in. You just don't want him anywhere there are other dogs until he has all his shots done (prob. around 4 months old). It's not so much age that matters, just if he's been fully vaccinated and more about other dogs, not about being outside. Most dogs do the "kind of sleeping, eyes partially open thing", that's normal as long as he also sleeps deeply a few times a day. He probably wants to stay awake, but gets so tired that his eyes droop. He's really young, so he needs lots of sleep. If he seems really tired like that, maybe put him somewhere with very little activity so he can rest better, nothing to worry about though, all my dogs do that. How's he been eating for you?

YT Addict | Two pads works great!!!! I have a 6 month old yorkie and she did the same thing when it came to potty training. She managed to pee on the pad, but rarely pooped on it! I put down two pads.............and "YAY" it worked. Make sure that you make a VERY big deal out of it when he does go poop on the pad. Even though Rylee is 6 months old now and been potty trained for some time.......we STILL let her know how proud we are of her when she does her "business" on the pad!!!! By the way...........we feed her Mini Puppy Royal Canin and she loves it!!!! Your new baby is SOOOOO cute. Congratulations and ENJOY!!!!!

| I've put down 2 mats now, hopefully he'll start using them both, thanks for the idea! I was wondering if I should leave him alone in the house at such a young age. I've been with him all day since he arrived mostly because of his age, he's also been around people 24/7 for a while now |
