| Am I training my Yorkie properly? My husband and I purchased our first dog on Saturday and I was hoping I could get some insight and some questions answered. We brought Elvis to the vet on Monday and the doctor gave us a schedule to stick to when training him to go to the bathroom. Our plan is to train him to go to the bathroom on a pee pad because he is too little to go outside right now and when he is old enough to go outside, we will be bringing him out there. However, I know it's only been two days but it seems like he hates the pee pad and wont go on it. The schedule the vet gave us is: 7am - wake up & bring him to the pee pad. Wait until he goes pee. After he goes pee, let him eat and play for 25 mins and bring him back to the pee pad to pee again. Repeat procedure at 4:30pm and at 9pm. My problem is that when I bring him on the pee pad he wont go! I can make him sit there for 20 minutes and he wont go but 5 minutes after I take him off of the pee pad he'll go. Is that normal? And also, how long is it normal to keep him on the pee pad if he hasn't gone after 5 minutes? I don't know if I am giving this enough time, maybe I'm not, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

| Sounds like your dog's actions are pretty normal for a Yorkie. The one thing you didn't mention is lots of praise and treats when he does it right -- that's very important. I'm sure others will have different opinions, but you might have to confine Elvis in a smaller space or keep a better eye on him. If he goes off the pad you'll have to catch him and startle him and place him back on the pad. If he goes on the pad big treats and lots of praise. No punishment if he goes off the pad other than a brief startle and back on the pad. If you don't catch him in the act I would just ignore it. Many owners find crate training the way to go. You might want to give that a try if other methods fail. By the way, you may have to do this more often as Yorkie puppies have very small bladders. Last edited by ziggy925; 03-31-2011 at 06:30 PM. |

| Is the pee pad just on the floor or inside a play pen area? I covered the floor of a playpen with pee pads and put my puppy in there in the morning until she went pee, than I told her what a good girl she was a gave her a treat. The key is creating a situation where the puppy goes where you want it to, so you can praise & reward, and not giving them the option of going elsewhere. You do this a few times & they get the hint that if they go pee they get a a treat & get to come out to play.

| I agree with the others, praise is key. Keep your puppy contained to a small area where you can supervise and where the pee pad is readily available. Using an xpen makes it really easy to hit the target. Bring your puppy to the pad and acquaint him with key words like potty, pee, or poop, whatever you like. Tell him potty here and tap the pad. Don't worry if he doesn't go on command. When he does go on the pad, throw a party! Praise him and show him you are happy, and give him a little treat. Usually pups learn very quickly to repeat the good potty to please you and earn a little treat (I use a single piece of kibble). Keep in mind that your Yorkie will need to potty more than 3 times a day all of his life. As a pup, he will need lots of potty breaks because his bladder is tiny and still developing. Many people recommend when training to make pottying available hourly. Overnight, Yorkies generally can go much longer without a break. I use disposable pads that are infused with an attractant scent. Sometimes dogs will respond better to one brand over another, so you may have to do some experimenting. Don't focus on scolding for accidents. If you catch him in the act, you can say "uh uh uh" or "uh oh" and bring him to the pad and tell him again to potty there. Then clean up accident sites with an enzyme cleaner to remove the scent that may attract him to return to the spot. Good luck and congratulations on your new pup. Wishing you and Elvis lots of happiness.

| i tried to pee pad train princess for a long time then gave up to teach her to go outside. it was after all this that i heard a great tip. if she would pee in the house (since i wanted her trained on both) i would soak it up with a pad, take her to it, let her sniff it then go on my "good girl, go potty" rant about 50 times. she learned so quick that her pee on the pad was awesome, and i've done the same with poop. maybe this will work for you, too. and again, praise is everything! these puppies are little pleasers & when princess gets praised for something you can see it just makes her day.

| What I did with Layla was watch her at all times she was out of the crate. I mean like a hawk. I wouldn't take my eyes off of her...not even for a second. So every-time she squatted to pee (even after having been on the pad) I would say "NO!" And put her on the pad and tap it and say "go here! Here." Eventually she got it but those first few weeks were really stressful. She learned perfectly in just three weeks so something about my method worked...lol. Hope this helps!

| I love Elvis!!! I had a Dachshund named Elvis... Now I have Cash, I took him outside from the start, there was no schedule, just when he woke up, or stopped playing or just any change in behavior he went outside...sometimes we would be out there a while but we didn't come in til he did something, and he got treats for going and lots of cheers and lovin... Now when he comes in he goes straight to his treats, even if he didn't do anything!! They are so easy to spoil. Enjoy your lil King Elvis...

| I have both a girl and a boy. MNy little girl learned and is 100% housebroken to go on the pee pads. It took her to be about 8 months old before I could fully trust her. I did start off with the play pen, then stretched out her area to the laundry room, where I put up a gate where she could see us and not feel that she's all alone and then slowly slowly expanded her area. My little guy - from the beginning was giving me a hard time. I have come to learn that he needs to go outside - the pads won't do it. So every yorkie is different - whatever works for you.
