| Pooping During the Night Hi Gang! We just recently moved to a new home and Moose is having trouble remembering where to potty at night. In our old condo (3rd Floor), he had a potty pad that he used everyday for pee and poop. He never had any issues with going on the pad. We moved to a new home where he access to outside all day (and we are home all day) so we wanted to eliminate the pad entirely. We take him out numerous times during the day and every night before bed (late- around 11 often) but leave the potty pad down just in case. He has no problems going pee on the pad but every single night he poops somewhere on the carpet. He's even went upstairs to an empty bedroom to poop! This happens every night sometime during the night. His food is out all day because he is a grazer. We usually have problems getting him to eat in the am so his food is left down all day because he likes to munch bites here and there. Is there anyway to keep him from pooping during the middle of the night without taking away his food in the afternoon? Thanks! |

| I agree, limit his roaming space at night. What time do you wake up to take him out for his first potty break? My younger boy has a fast system and he often poops before bedtime, about 11 pm, and then again first thing in the morning, 6 - 7 am. Sometimes it is as early as 5 am, grrrr. We use pads, but he wakes me up first so that I can take care of it right away.

| Thanks for the tips guys! He actually is confined to one room now, by gates. (He kept pooping upstairs continually so we gated him to one room when we are gone) His potty pad is right near his bed but every night he continues to poop on the carpet. We take him out last around 11'ish and in the morning around 8. He sleeps in the living room, not in our bedroom, so he couldn't really "wake us up" to go if he had to. But thats what his potty pad is for at night. (Its there all day too) We thought since he's used a pottypad for 3 years he would still know to go on it at night like always, we wonder why he likes to poop on the actual carpet? The funny thing is- he knows its wrong I think- when we come in the morning and see it, he looks away from us and wants to hide. Very strange... also we have beige carpet so waking up to poop stains every morning is super frustrating! Especially since he's been trained for 3 years. Just dont want to crate him or take away his food since he's a grazer but we are just super confused as to why it has to be on the carpet. |

| In the past, in your previous home, he pooped on the pad at night? Do I understand correctly? Or is his need to poop during the night a new thing? Is his piddle pad sort of full of pee in the morning? My boys prefer a fresher pad for poops. Did you have carpeting in your previous home?

| Yes in our condo he did poop on the pad every night because we lived on 3rd floor and didn't take him out late at night. So he's been doing that (having few mistakes) for 3 years now. We change his potty pads after he pees on them twice, plus during the day he pees and poops outside so he doesn't use them. So theyre never full at night when he should be pooping on them. We had carpet in the bedrooms and another room that he was free to roam around on. The new house is entirely carpet except for the kitchen. So- he's confined to the living room for sleeping at night (carpet) and his potty pad is actually on the tile in the kitchen. (in case of accidents tile is easier to clean) So he has carpet and tile, but he keeps pooping on the carpet only. He pees on the pad at night! But poops on the carpet! |

| Then I would take up his food at 5 pm, no earlier. Make sure he gets evening exercise and take him out for potty before bed. Or, try an xpen with the pad at night until he starts pooping on the pad. I wouldn't use a crate. Or, take up the food at 5 pm, and wake up earlier than 8 to take him out to potty. Or, it is possible to change a grazer into a scheduled eater, if your schedule allows.

| Don't let him have run of the house at night, and start giving him 1/4th or 1/3 cup of food twice a day. If after 5 minutes he hasn't eaten his food then take it up and wait till the next meal. He will soon learn to eat when it's put down.

| Does he ever eat late? Try taking his food up each night around 6 or 7, depending on what time you all go to bed. That way he'll learn to eat earlier and may not have to go as much at night

| Thanks Maximo! Looks like I'm going to have to change his eating habits if we can't get him to start going on the pad I hate to do that because he's always been a grazer but for some reason he's really confused about pooping now. And since we can tell he knows its wrong it makes me wonder if he's starting to think its wrong to poop at all, much less on the carpet. Moose has never ever went up stairs (he had LP surgery a year ago and we forbid it) and he has never wanted to go upstairs. He never tries to and he's scared of them. But he had been (before the gate) been going up 1 huge flight, a corner turn and another flight of stairs to poop up there! That is definitely the strangest thing. If he doesn't eat in the evening and waits until late to eat the next morning he will throw up because of an empty stomach- so I know that turning him into a scheduled eater is going to involve lots of upset tummy and him getting sick before he finally gets it. But looks like that may be the only thing.. I'm going to try the xpen thing first to see if he'll start to understand that over time. Hope so! |

| Yes we may have to do this! I just know there will be lots of sick days before he gets it probably. Because if for some reason he doesn't eat at night and waits till late the next morning to eat he'll throwup from an empty tummy. But just might have to get through it and teach him this, sounds like the best way to keep him from going at night |

| My younger boy, the waif, has the same tummy issues. You can work on changing Moose into a scheduled eater and still give him 3-4 pieces of kibble later in the evening. His system should regulate so that his pooping gets on a schedule. To encourage him to eat in the morning, take him on a walk or play fetch. Get his motor running and hand feed a few kibble in the am if necessary. Or you can encourage him to eat with a teaspoon of plain, no additives yogurt. The move to your new home is probably the reason for the changes in behavior.
