Or, try an xpen with the pad at night until he starts pooping on the pad. I wouldn't use a crate.

Or, take up the food at 5 pm, and wake up earlier than 8 to take him out to potty.

Or, it is possible to change a grazer into a scheduled eater, if your schedule allows.
