| ![]() Hi guys... I have a serious concern. My dog, Max(imus), is now almost 7 months old (on 3/5/05, 7 months). He was already neutered at 3 months. I had a really hard time tryng to potty train max. If you remember, I tried everything, and nothing worked. As a last resort, I used a treat method. And it worked better. Then, for about a week or two, he finally began to go on the pad on his own!! I was so happy. And I thought he was trained now. So since is he is kind of getting old, I began to slowly stop giving him treats (maybe no treat on 1 time out of 5 times). But that could not be the reason, could it?? Last week, he began to have "accidents"!! Listen to this, do you call this accidents?? 4 days ago, I found that he had peed on my bed earlier that day and it was dried up. He should have known better not to by now, cause he sleeps there. Then 3 days ago, he peed on downstairs floor for no reason. He was going on the pad very well for the last 2 weeks upstairs, what is going on? Then 2 days ago, he got on my bed, and I told him "no potty"(he recognizes this word), and he looked at me, and began peeing on my bed again. And yesterday, he came in my room, then began peeing a foot away from the pad on the carpet! Other times, it's hard to tell if he will do it on the pad on his own, b/c I take him there to potty there. So now I dont know if he would do it on his own on the pad. Ok.... Is my dog neurotic? or do any of your dogs have this kind of so called "accidents" daily at 7 months old??? Please, yorkie experts, help me, tell me what I should do. I reprimanded him for peeing on wrong places. And took away the stains by carpet cleaners and repellants. Tell me, do I have no hope with Max...? What do I do now? If he won't be trained, I have to give him up... And I tried so hard for the last 3 and a 1/2 months... It is so depressing... I thought accidents are once in a while, not daily. Please tell me your experiences.... Thank you... ![]()

| ![]() In my opinion I think he is testing you. He is testing his boundaries. I would try the treat thing again and say "good boy" or something like that. After awhile slowly take the treats away, but keep saying "good boy" and making a big fuss over hime, and he will start associating you fussing over him as his reward. You could also call a trainer and have them come to your house. They only have to come once if you want, but it gives them a chance to show you the best way to handle this in your home. I took Tinker to a trainer for some behavior problems, but I think I am going to have them come to my house once or twice that way they can see the surroundings, and figure out the best way to handle the situation. Good Luck! ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() I think at this age your going to have to get tough. Not on the Yorkie but with procedure. When he is out, have him leashed to your belt. Don't let him out of your site. No free run of the house. When you take him out for potty and he goes, continue with the treats and lots of praise. If you can't be with him, watching him crate him. He will learn with time and patience. Also I would check and make sure he doesn't have a bladder infection just in case. You can also use belly bands to keep anything from getting spayed but that won't teach him anything. |

| ![]() A lot of people will say it doesn't work but I think it depends on the Yorkie. At 2 years old Bouncer would StILL have "accidents". We soon learned he was testing us as well. I bought a belly band and a doggie "diaper". After about 2 weeks, he realized "Oh...I pee on myself in here if I don't go when I get outside! I don't like this!" Now of course he is a 4.5 lb dog and they have tiny bladders and we have the ocassional accident, but he's SOOO much better now! As yucky as it sounds to let your dog "pee on themselves" it worked WONDERS for Bouncer.

| ![]() Thanks.. what is belly band?? What does it do? I never used that or the diaper. Also, how often am I supposed to let him go to the spot to pee? he is pad trained. Do I take him every 4 hours? He is 7 months old now. What do you do?

| ![]() Belly bands are boy diapers. They are rectangle shaped (usually close with velcro) that goes around the belly. Most you can put a pad in to catch any potty mistakes. Change them often if they go in there so they don't get infection. As said above though some hate to be wet and it may help. I would take him to the pad every hour till I saw his pattern or schedule. Of course if your not able the confinement or belly bands will help you out. |

| ![]() Thanks Tinker... I read your post and decided, "ok, I am going to do that, be patient and keep trying my treat method". Then, he had his so called "accident" again on the floor downstairs again. Now, I am starting to think that those times he came to the pad on his own to pee were the accidents, not these that he does on the floor! Yes, he did it again today. He is doing this every day. And every time, he gets reprimanded. Of course every time I take him to the pad and he does it, he gets a treat and praises. Should I just keep trying the same things?

| ![]() Maybe put the pad where he likes to go downstairs and he will get the idea. I do that with Pita, but I'm not sure if I'm training her to use the Pads or if she's training me to put them where she wants to go!! |

| ![]() Do you use a carpet cleaner when you clean up his pee spots? You can go to petsmart and get a spray that takes the spell out, because male dogs tend to pee in the same spots. This is the way I trained Tinker: I took a big plastic tub and put a pad in the bottome of it. Every 20 min or so I would stick her in there, and not pick her up until she pees. Once she did her business I gave her a treat. I also kept a pad on the floor in case she decided to pee on it. After a couple day I took the pad out and started doing the same thing with the pad on the floor. She picked it up in less than a week. I would give that a go. I think you are just going to have to go back to square one. I think it will work. I was amazed at how fast Tinker pick it up, because she figured it out that I wouldn't pick her up until she peed and she would get a treat. Also whenever you take a shower put him in the bathroom with you with a pad so he doesn't have as much room and will hopefull chose to pee on the pad. I hope this helps!!! ME and Tinker are rootin' for ya!! |

| ![]() I know we all Love our little Babies! Don't take this the wrong way.....You are having a serious "Power Struggle", any dog that will pee on your bed, is not just having an accident! I used to Breed and raise American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers. I've had alot of different dogs, both males and females. My point is I've had alot of experience with animals, even though Yorkies are sweet & lovable, they are still pack animals and you are supposed to be the Pack Leader! I don't know all the details, but he is challenging you, you need to spend more time observing him and think, what are you doing differently. They pretty much train us......force of any kind does not work on them, you have to out think him. If that makes any sense? Good Luck! ![]() |
