| Litter Box Training I am new to the site and I really need help. I need help so badly that I dont sleep at night and I make myself sick do to what I am going to do with my new puppy. My husband bought me a new yorkie who is 14 weeks old. He got her at a pet store and of course they leave their puppys in cages and they just poo and pee as they pleased in the cages. I know almost everyone on here is posting stuff on potty training but I cant really find anything on litter training. The situation I am having is that my puppy wont go to the bathroom outside 70% of the time. What we have is her crate and we have a pen connected to it in a square shape. When we take her on her leash outside she wont go, but once I put her in her pen she pees right away. So, my husband and I decided on a litter box in her pen. We had just bought it today and I placed her into it and all she wants to do it eat it or dig in it and make a mess. Another problem we are having is she poops in her kennel. I have woken up at 7 am and found poop in her cage. What do I do? I dont like to take her to the grass because she eats and puts everything in her mouth. Does anyone have suggestions on what I need to do to get her to go in the litter box? We think if she went in her box then we wont have to worry. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow and I will see what they have to say. Any ideas would be great, and thank you for your time. Christina |

| Potty Pad I'm not sure about litter training since my Mocha would probably eat it too. Like your puppy. My puppy came with a playpen from the breeder (not an expensive dog one, but one for human baby that she bought from yard sale for $15). I was told to split the playpen in half, put his bed in half and the potty pad in the other. My Mocha learned to go on the potty pad the same day. He does not want to get his bed dirty. This should solve your problem in the mean time. When Mocha got a little older I started taking him out every hour and stretch longer and longer. Each time he potty outside I praise him and give him a treat. I also bought one of those potty training bells so he can "ring the bell" when he wants to go potty. He is now 9 months old and doing great! Maybe you should just try training one step at a time like me. 14 weeks is very young so have patience. Don't expect too much at the beginning. Hope this helps and good luck! |

| Look up WizDog or UGOdog, both of these are litter free, toilet systems. I made a homemade one and it works great. still having a few issues with his poo aim, but the pee always hits the tray. no litter no mess. nothing for them to eat.

| I've litter box potty trained all three of my pups now ages 21 weeks, 20 weeks and 16 weeks, and love it plus they also go potty outside. What helped me is using a small crate for each one with a divider in it that just gives them enough room to sleep that I keep in my bedroom. I put them in at night and when I go out and when they take their naps. When they wake they have to go right away so I take them out one at a time put them in the box and tell them to go potty. They dig in it chew the stuff sometimes (it recycled paper) walk in circles if they hop out when I know they have to go after being crated for a few hours I put them back in and tell them again. I make a big deal when they go say yeah good girl to potty and give them lot of kisses. My youngest still wakes in the middle of the night and has to use the litter box. She will wimpier I let her out put her in the box she goes gets a drink of water and goes right back to sleep. I always keep the litter boxes in the same place by my baby gate in the room I use to keep them in during the day. They graduated out of the x pen and now get the whole living-room. I take them out for exercise and when they go I say good girl again and make a big deal over it. If they make a mistake and go on the floor I just clean it up. They haven't had one in over a month now so knock on wood. I hope this helps. |

| I put pee pads in a cat litter box and used the plastic liners to catch any loose stuff, it worked great and he never tried to eat it. Remember to keep treats near by and praise when they get it right- good luck! |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | If you are using the dog litter, it will help if you spray bitter apple on the pellets, it tastes nasty, and the pup will stop eating it. If she is not peeing or pooping, it helps to pick up the poop and put it in the box, let her smell it, then she will know to go there, the same with pee, just wipe a small amount on a paper towel and put it in the box. While you are training her to the litter box, the set up you described with the crate and the litter box inside the x-pen will work well. Baxter used the litter box for his first 2 years, but Cooper never liked it, he would only go on a pee pad. I don't think he liked the feel of the pellets. If you are just starting with this, pee pads in a holder are the easiest way to go, as far as clean up, and cost. I was finally able to do away with the litter box this year & went to strictly pee pads, and they only use those on rainy days. |

No Longer a Member | I would avoid litter, I can imagine it getting stuck in his fur and getting dragged all around my house. And I can see how it would appeal to them to eat, since I can't keep Rizzo out of the kitty litter box so that room has to be gated off at all times. Silly puppies, I recommend potty pads or the uGodog system as mentioned above, easy clean up and few messes. I'm luck with Rizzo he has a very reliable poo system, once in the morning when I let him out and once in the evening when he goes out. No poo messes for the last 4 months! |

No Longer a Member | The best thing I have found to use indoors is the plastic tray that they use under rabbit hutches. They come in different sizes. I have a 30"x30" and a 24"x24". The sides are high enough that they have to get in them, 3". I have one big one that I lay the washable pads in then I have a smaller one that the throw away puppy pads fit in. It works so good for the puppies. It will keep any urine from leaking thru to the floor too. I tried the grass ones but I couldn't get the urine smell out of the grass. I really recommend these trays. I got mine at Tractor supply. |
