| Newly adopted male aggressive toward other dogs I adopted two Yorkies, both males, 1 is w years old. The other is 5 1/2 and is not well socialized with other dogs. He gets along pretty well with his fellow adoptee and they share a bowl well and don't squabble at all over treats or toys. However, the 5 1/2 year old goes berserk when he sees a cat, big dog or squirrel. And no matter what I know to do he won't stop. He screams like he's been run over. It went on for almost 30 minutes when I took him for his vet check and I kept thinking OK he'll stop, but no. It's like he loses his mind and I can't bring him back. He has been neutered and is very well behaved in all other ways. Even housebroken. Plus he has already learned sit, and down. This screaming barking thing really has me, though. |

| Sorry I don't have any advice for that one. It sounds like something you can live with if you have to. As long as he gets along with your other dog; you and your family . . that may be all you can ask. Of course, that is going to make walking difficult if you like to take them for walks. If so, you might consult a trainer. So glad they ended up in your capable hands.

| Did you just adopt them? Both at the same time? Rescues can be challenging. If you adopted them both at the same time you've got your work cut out for you. All rescues come with baggage. Be patient. As Ringo said, consulting a trainer might help. This is one of my favorite rescue poems: Baggage Now that I'm home, bathed, settled, and fed, All nicely tucked into my warm new bed. I would like to open my baggage Lest I forget, There is so much to carry - So much to regret. Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top - Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss, And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame. As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave - I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain. I loved them, the others, the ones who left me, But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me. Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack? Or will you just look at my things and take me right back? Do you have the time to help me unpack? To put away my baggage, To never re-pack? I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see, But I do come with baggage - Will you still want me? By Evelyn Colbath |

| Thank you for your replies Ringo1 and LadyMom. I did adopt them both at the same time and it does make walking them very difficult. There are cats, squirrels and other dogs almost everywhere you go. I have tried several techniques I know on him and nothing works so I have contacted a trainer that works only with positive reinforcement that is very close to me. She has a big dog that is specially trained to help with problems just like this. I hope we can start working with her after Thanksgiving. I already deeply love my boys and know we can work through any problems that they have, which is really very few for adoptees. They aren't our first rescue dogs. And Ladymom, I love that poem. |

| I thought I would update my situation. On advice from the trainer I am working with a clicker and positive reinforcement via treats and a few other little things like hooking his leash to the front of his halter so I can pull him gently toward me and away from the stimulus. My baby is improving already. We still have work to do but I know we will get there. Hurray!! Before there was nothing I could do to get his attention. Now, it's very easy to get his attention, stop the barking.screaming, give the treat, and continue our walk. |

| It's a process dealing with aggression toward other dogs My guy Zach is aggressive with other dogs And it has to do with socialization My schedule doesn't allow me to get my pups out enough to visit with other dogs as much as they should My mike is fine with other dogs but Zach being the alpha has to claim his dominance Having a trainer work with your pup is a great place to start because its a habituation thing ... And once they get used to having new digs come round their natural instincts will kick in because dogs are naturally gregarious pack animals
