| To crate or not...that's the questions? Okay, i just have to ask you guys for advice. Especially the ones that did not crate train their Yorkies but still got them potty trained. That's the story: I have had Freddy for 2 months. I got him when he was 3 months. I try to potty train him to go outside only. While I am at work he spends the day in the gated off kitchen. He goes anywhere in the kitchen, although i put potty pads down but sometimes he uses them..sometimes he doesn't. He also prefers newspaper. Well, when i am home i take him out to potty every 2 hours or so...and it is going good. He knows what "potty" means and does go outside when i take him out. He is learning to use the bell to let me know that he needs to go...but not all the time...well we are working on that. My question is: how is he going to understand that he needs to hold it while i am at work? I believe that he will just go anywhere because i am not there to tell him to go on the potty pads and when i am home, i take him outside. Now i am thinking about crate training him...i do not like the thought of him being in the crate for over 8 hours but i don't think i will ever get him potty trained if he can go in the kitchen...you know what i mean? He hates being in his crate. (We let him sleep in the bed with us because he would cry all night when he was in his crate and sleeps through the night in the bed.) I know that he can hold it for such a long time because i did put him in the crate once before when i was working and he did hold it until i was home to let him out. How did you guys potty train your baby without using the crate method? I know that there is a lot of info on YT about potty training but everything is pretty much about crate training..... Would also be thankful for a link to a thread that explains other methods... |

| If you are not home 8 hrs a day, gating him in your kitchen, using newpaper and he only potties sometimes on the newspaper you will not be able to train him to potty outside. It will be a forever struggle. My suggestion would be to make is space smaller with an Xpen and use pee pads instead of newspaper. With an Xpen you can put a pee pad in the Xpen and he will be able to use it while you are gone and still be able to move around. I really didn't use a crate for potty training but I was not gone for 8 hrs a day like you are. I'd think it would be very hard to do and accomplish 100% potty training. Good luck.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Have you trained him on the pee pads? If not there is no use putting them down because he wont know what they are or what they are for. If you HAVE trained him on the pads but are taking him outside when you are home this may be confusing him. My pup is 5 1/2 months old, I got her at 6 weeks and she has been pad trained since she was 2 months old. The past few weeks I have started to train her to go outside. I would take her outside every hour to potty but would leave a pad at the back door just in case, well she started to totally ignore the pad so I think it was confusing her. She was in a pen with a pad at one end while we were at work, so I think she was confused because it was okay for her to use the pad while in the pen but when out of the pen she must go outside?? So I decided to remove the pads all together and crate her at night and when we are at work. Poppy is left alone for a max of 5 hours (not every day) as I still live with my parents and we all work different shift patterns so I can see we have it easier then you do. But she does hold it when she is in the crate and that includes over night which is around 8 hours, being the same age as your little one he should be able to hold it. Some people think the crate is cruel, its the opposite. The crate is the easiest way to train IMO, your pup may not like it at first but he will begin to see it as his 'den' and will learn to love it. Put the crate in your bedroom so hes not alone at night and he should do fine. Good luck!

| We trained Kona on peepads first. So when we were at home, we'd take him to the peeped and say "go potty" and treat him. So when we were at work, he'd go on the pad. Then after a year, we decided to outside train him. So when we were at home, we'd take him outside and say go potty and treat. But we still put out a peepad when we were gone just in case. So now, he'll usually wait for us to come home from work to be let outside. But sometimes he just can't hold it so he'll pee on his pad while we're gone. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | A smaller Xpen system is ideal. Place the bed, pee pads (scented is great for initial training) stuffed toy, etc. in the Xpen. You can also place a crate in there with the door opened as it will become a den to sleep in. Ensure that you have food and water in the Xpen as well. It will become the puppy's home until you arrive home from work. A puppy does get accustomed to that system very quickly. When we go out for our shopping and any other activity, we always place our adults in an Xpen for security. They sleep most of the time when you are not home. It will be very hard to train a puppy on a pee pad if the area that it is in is very large. There is just to much room to wander in. If newspapers are preferred try to get the unprinted type. It is sold in craft stores. This way the wet ink will not stain your floor. Good luck. |
