If you are not home 8 hrs a day, gating him in your kitchen, using newpaper and he only potties sometimes on the newspaper you will not be able to train him to potty outside. It will be a forever struggle.

My suggestion would be to make is space smaller with an Xpen and use pee pads instead of newspaper. With an Xpen you can put a pee pad in the Xpen and he will be able to use it while you are gone and still be able to move around.

I really didn't use a crate for potty training but I was not gone for 8 hrs a day like you are. I'd think it would be very hard to do and accomplish 100% potty training. Good luck.
