A smaller Xpen system is ideal. Place the bed, pee pads (scented is great for initial training) stuffed toy, etc. in the Xpen. You can also place a crate in there with the door opened as it will become a den to sleep in. Ensure that you have food and water in the Xpen as well. It will become the puppy's home until you arrive home from work.

A puppy does get accustomed to that system very quickly. When we go out for our shopping and any other activity, we always place our adults in an Xpen for security. They sleep most of the time when you are not home.

It will be very hard to train a puppy on a pee pad if the area that it is in is very large. There is just to much room to wander in. If newspapers are preferred try to get the unprinted type. It is sold in craft stores. This way the wet ink will not stain your floor.

Good luck.
