| Peeing in crate I have a 7 month old Yorkie who I've had now for 3 months. We are still having potty training issues. They say that a dog won't go potty in his personal space but that's not true. I've been crate training him since day 1 and in the last month he has been pooping and peeing in his crate. He recently stopped with the pooping but now he pees all the time (while I am at work and at night). I take him on a 45 minutes walk after he eats and drinks to get as much of it out and get him tired. He usually pees twice. Then I am away from the apartment for 9 hours while I am at work and he pees in it. I know he can hold it because he was doing this for a while. He also runs around the apartment for hours and looks for his leash as to tell me he wants to go outside. I am just so incredibly frustrated. I need some helpful tips, guidance, secrets, anything you can offer me. |

| Not sure, but the first thing I would do is bring him to the vet to be sure there isn't a health issue (UTI, etc.). If all is well there, then maybe he's just not getting enough time out of the crate. 9 hours is a long time for a 7-month old. Have you thought of an x-pen during the day with a pee pad, toys, etc., and reserve the crate for just at night?

| I kind of agree with Roccosmommy - 9 hrs is a long time during the day to be crated. Most dogs can hold it that long during the night - but during the day is a different story. I keep mine (I have 2) in the laundry area at night and when I am not at home with peepads down. When I get to them in the morning the peepad has quite a few spots on it and its not even 9 hours. Also, are you sure that the crate is not too big? There should only be enough room for them to stand and turn around. Anyway, yorkies sometimes take a long time to fully housebreak, sometimes it just doesn't happen. My Coco was 8 months old before she was 100% accident free. My 8 month old on the other hand has yet to grasp the concept. Good luck to you. |

| TexasChica, My 5 month old is doing the exact same thing! She stays in her crate 8-9 hrs during the day while im at work, and is also staying in her crate at night. When i get home from work, there is usually at least one pee spot. At night, she's started crying until i can get up and take her out. I need help too!! EDIT: Her crate is small, but it's alittle more room then to just turn around. Is this the problem?

| I've always read that a puppy can hold it for their age in months plus an hour. So a 7 month old puppy, would technically only be able to hold it for 8 hours. I would suggest trying a dog walker or someone to let your dog out. |

| I give mine a larger area if I am going to be gone long. I have a run type area in my laundry room with a large kennel at the end. I have a large container in the kennel that they use as a litter box. For litter I use wood pellets (free of chemicals!). At the other end of their area I put their kennels or beds and food and water. I was surprised how easy they took to the litter box. Now I don't have to worry about them having to hold it to long and when the weather gets nasty (as it does about 6 months out of the year here in Alaska) they have a place to go. Give it a try. |

Yorkie Yakker | I agree with the idea of an exercise pen since you live in an apartment. I have a 11 week old yorkie and even when I'm only gone for 5 hours at the most, I still leave her in the exercise pen instead of just her crate. I line the exercise pen with puppy pads and leave her crate in one corner and food and water in the other corner. She hasn't peed or pooped in her crate with this system.
