I give mine a larger area if I am going to be gone long. I have a run type area in my laundry room with a large kennel at the end. I have a large container in the kennel that they use as a litter box. For litter I use wood pellets (free of chemicals!). At the other end of their area I put their kennels or beds and food and water. I was surprised how easy they took to the litter box. Now I don't have to worry about them having to hold it to long and when the weather gets nasty (as it does about 6 months out of the year here in Alaska) they have a place to go. Give it a try.
