| How Do You Get Them to STOP Jumping on People Cooper is notorious for jumping up on people to give them kisses. I say "NO" or "DOWN" but it usually takes a while for him to listen and by that time the victim is completely slobbered & I'm embarrassed. Generally when people other than friends and family come over I tend to pick Cooper up and hold him or put him in another room. Sometimes I'll put him in a fenced in private area also. I would love for him to be able to calmly walk around while people are here. Tomorrow I have a health insurance sales person coming over. I can't hold Cooper (and I hate doing that) because I'll have to sign some papers. Do you have any advice to get him not to jump up on this person? In the next couple of weeks I'll have people here installing new windows for the entire day! Ugh I don't know what to do.

| I have the same problem with Addy, she goes absolutely crazy for the first ten or fifteen minutes after someone comes in. She is all over them and up in their faces giving kisses. Good luck on finding a cure!! |

| LOL, thanks. Cooper will stop after a while, but I need to keep in mind that not everyone loves dogs and would rather he not jump at all.

| I know with larger dogs, you can give them a knee to their chest to make them not jump, but with these little guys, I think maybe you should put a leash on them when you know someone is coming over, and when they get there just make sure if they jump up you can sorta pull back on the leash. That sounds harsh, but I'm sure it will work. You could also tell your guests to just ignore your pet when they first walk in, and let them calm down before saying hi to them, or maybe, just have them turn their backs if your dog jumps, sometimes when they don't get paid attention to, they stop! Good LUck!

| Yes same here. I think tomorrow, i'll just have to put a harness and leash on him and then just tie the leash to the chair. It's an awful solution but I guess I should not use tomorrow's visitor as a training lesson. I'll have to figure something else out and really commit to working on it.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Ceasar Milan and the girl from It's Me or the Dogs (sorry, can't remember her name right now) advocate coming in and totally ignoring the dog until it's in a calm state of mind. Turn your back on it, fold your arms and look away if it's jumping. The dog only gets attention once it settles down (whether that is just sitting at your feet or going to it's place is up to you.) I admit, it's hard to do with the smaller dogs 'cause they are so darn cute. And it's not like they are going to knock you off your feet with their greetings. But even with a big dog I would never knee it in the chest or step on it's foot to get them to back off. Dogs want to please. And I think Yorkies are exceptionally smart and pick up on right and wrong quickly. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | For situations like that, I'd either crate them or put them in an x-pen. It's an awful lot to ask them to totally leave a visitor alone for an extended period. For long term, you might try working on sit-stays. Get them to sit and stay while a visitor enters the home and sits down. Treat for success and release them once the visitor is seated.

Also I hate to imagine if I had a 100 pound dog. He would kill people because I couldn't stop it.

| We did it! The insurance agent came over and it was somewhat successful. I put Cooper's harness on about 15 minutes before he arrived so that I wouldn't have to fiddle with it later on. That totally backfired because he immediately became overexcited, thinking i'm taking him for a walk. So I took him out for 2 minutes and came back in and he was happy. I hooked the leash to a chair and told Cooper to stay as I opened the front door. He sat and actually stayed & did not appear excited at all! However, we had a little setback when the man decided to sit at the table where Cooper was tied Didn't he see the attack dog? Well, that's pretty much what happened; the jumping began. I moved Cooper to another location, only 5 feet away. He laid down and was perfect the whole time! I gave him a treat & was so pleased with his behavior. He cried a little bit, but that's ok. The insurance agent probably thought I was crazy taking a photo of my dog. And I bet Cooper thought I was hiring a new trainer.
