For situations like that, I'd either crate them or put them in an x-pen. It's an awful lot to ask them to totally leave a visitor alone for an extended period.
For long term, you might try working on sit-stays. Get them to sit and stay while a visitor enters the home and sits down. Treat for success and release them once the visitor is seated.
