| Peeing in Crate... Need Advice My puppy is 11 wks right now and when I first got her, we were doing crate training. She soiled from the beginning but I didn't know until I took her bedding out to wash and it had absorbed a ton of pee. So I took the bedding out in hopes of eliminating that behavior. She still soiled her crate anyways. I really think she soils in her crate because for one she hates being in there and two I think she knows that she will get to come out if she soils in the crate. I want her to enjoy being in her crate but I hate having her soil and then be standing in her pee and poo. So right now I have her gated inside my fairly small bathroom with her pee pee pad on one end and food and bedding on the other side. When she is in there she doesn't make mistakes about 85% of the time but of course I let her out so she can play but for the most part she spends her time in there occupying herself with toys and sleeping. I know crating doesn't work with all dogs but my ultimate goal is just to get her 100% housebroken because its already been over 6 wks of working with her on potty training and its frustrating not seeing 100% progress already. Should I change what I'm doing or use an x-pen instead? Is there a better way of housebreaking her? I want her to have freedom but she is not at all reliable around the house. |

We lock him in the pen at night, and when we can't take him out with us. He still pees and poos on the news papers at night time, on the odd occasion but we can clean that up with not too much trouble, and we get a full nights sleep. We thought at first we were not going to be able to cope as we are elderly, but now he is really good. He is 9 months old. Hope this is of help, and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me, I am always happy to help you. I will put you on my friendship list and hope that we can stay in contact. Best wishes, and hope everything works out fine for you and your little yorkie. Leone and Yorky

If you are piddle pad training then you need a designated piddle pad area outside those confines too. Reward her when she does well. SHe needs interaction. GOOD LUCK! Last edited by luvdorkyyorkies; 05-16-2010 at 03:57 PM.

You may have misconstrued what I said when I said she spends her own time occupying herself because that was an overstatement on my part. She is not at all confined for copious amounts of time but rather when we can't watch her. She is otherwise always interacting with someone in the house. She is a very spoiled and privileged puppy that knows it. The bathroom I have her confined in is in my bedroom and I use a pet gate because I don't think its nice to have her closed up inside the bathroom with the door shut. Its 3 feet away from me and I always talk to her and spend a lot of time with her. She is only 11 wks but she already knows the sit, stay, and down commands. The only time she is by herself is at night when its time for bed. So she definitely isn't lonely.

I did the same thing for my Yorkie/Pom. She kept peeing and pooping in her crate at night when she would lay next to my bed...and I'm guessing it's because she had to go potty in the night but didn't want to go on the carpet. Anyway, I bought a size large crate -- the ones with the plastic pans on the bottom and wires on top and 4 sides -- and placed her crate along with a pee pad in the pen and just kept her crate door open. At night, if she needed to, she'd come out and go pottie on the pad. Sometimes she wouldn't go at all....but the most important thing is I don't feed or let her drink water a few hours before bed time and I take her out before i put her in the crate. It helped a lot.
