I did the same thing for my Yorkie/Pom. She kept peeing and pooping in her crate at night when she would lay next to my bed...and I'm guessing it's because she had to go potty in the night but didn't want to go on the carpet. Anyway, I bought a size large crate -- the ones with the plastic pans on the bottom and wires on top and 4 sides -- and placed her crate along with a pee pad in the pen and just kept her crate door open. At night, if she needed to, she'd come out and go pottie on the pad. Sometimes she wouldn't go at all....but the most important thing is I don't feed or let her drink water a few hours before bed time and I take her out before i put her in the crate. It helped a lot.
