| Help! So our new little guy loves to dart out the front door! And he is REALLY fast so most of the time he is gone past your left before you even realize it! Thankfully we live in a small neighborhood on a cul-de-sac lot but still I hate when he does this. It is extremely hard to catch him to because he is sneaky and fast lol! If he runs out with Stedman he will just go where Stedman goes and it is not a big deal but if he is out by himself he just runs around like a mad man!! No amount of calling him will get him to come to you. We do not have a foyer where we could put a baby gate up to keep him from entering. I could put one of the front porch but DH was afraid our bigger dog would crash into it because when he is let out to go potty he runs full force out the door usually lol! I want to get him to stay when we open the door but so far he just hasn't caught on. Any advice? I read the other forum on what to do once they get out the door and I will be working on that. I just want ideas on how to get him to NOT run out the door at all unless he is on leash. We never ever let him outside off leash because our house borders 500acres of wetlands and there are just to many wild animals out there! His other family let him roam their yard alone to go potty so I am sure that he is just used to being able to go out the door when he wants to!

| Training Hints Hi I understand about running out the front door we also had a runner when my Teddy was a puppy. You need to buy a soft thin leash and leave it on all the time. Open you front door with the leash on and pull back and say no when your baby touches the door thresh hold and repeat several times a day. You have to leave the leash on and let is drag around the house (when you are home of course so not to let it get caught on any furniture). When the door opens and is your fur baby runs it will be much easier to catch you fur baby with the leash dragging. The leash can also train not to go into rooms of your house or furniture that is off limits (if there is any). Good Luck! |

| For your little one's safety, I would find some way of confining him such that he cannot shoot out the front door. Your foyer is not configured such that you can use a baby gate, is there another room where you can put one to limit your boy's access to the front door? If not, I would get a free standing gate -- the kind with 3 sections and a "door" that swings open. You can train your dog to sit and stay at the door, which is advisable, but it will take a lot of work and time to make the commands 100% reliable. My well-trained, 14 month old boy shot out my back door today for the first time ever and ran down the deck stairs and into the backyard. Thankfully it was only into my fenced yard, but it shocked me. I will never take a chance with the front door or garage door. |

| Well we can't block off the front door to him unless we leave him gated in a bedroom or the kitchen and I don't like him having to be seperate from us. I do have a excercise pen that folds up flat that I thought about using to barrier off the front door. We can step over it so can the kids. He can climb over it but it would eliminate his ability to dart out the door because I would catch him climbing up. I use it sometimes to block off his access to our downstairs finished basement area (the cats domain! lol) when the door is open.

| I have 2 baby gates at the bottome of my stairs--I took one apart and wired tied it to the sides of a full baby gate to make an "u" shape. This gives us room when we walk down the stairs to step onto the floor. I have turned this around to "close off" the front entrance when I knew someone was coming over. I really don't have a foyer, just a hallway that leads o the front door and then the stairs. It got to the point that the UPS man would crouch down ready to catch Hot Rod whenever he delivered a package, lol
