For your little one's safety, I would find some way of confining him such that he cannot shoot out the front door. Your foyer is not configured such that you can use a baby gate, is there another room where you can put one to limit your boy's access to the front door? If not, I would get a free standing gate -- the kind with 3 sections and a "door" that swings open.

You can train your dog to sit and stay at the door, which is advisable, but it will take a lot of work and time to make the commands 100% reliable.

My well-trained, 14 month old boy shot out my back door today for the first time ever and ran down the deck stairs and into the backyard. Thankfully it was only into my fenced yard, but it shocked me. I will never take a chance with the front door or garage door.
