| Potty Training I am having a really hard time getting Cooper to go to the bathroom outside. I can take him outside when I know he has to go, but he just walks around and sniffs. No matter how long I stay out there with him, he won't go...he waits til he gets back inside and then will immediately go on the floor. I can tell him NO and take him back outside to try and let him finish, but he will either play around or down on the grass and look at me like I'm stupid. I keep him in a crate at night and throughout the day while I'm at work and he never goes in there, just on the floor. I know he is still a puppy and its not just going to happen over night, but I figure he would atleast go outside every now and then. I'm starting to get really frustrated because If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate them. Thanks, Cassie |

Yorkie Talker | I am experiencing a similar challenge. I love JC more than anything and he is perfect in almost every way. However, even though he does go outside and he can easily wait 6 hours because he sleeps with me, he will sometimes still go in the house. I don't understand it because I know that he knows he's not supposed to. He even knows that I know he knows. To be perfectly honest, I'm getting impatient with his inconsistencies. I'm always having to keep an eye on him and it's time consuming. When I leave the house and put him in his room, he will sometimes use the pee pad and sometimes he won't. Then there are times he won't go at all and waits until I get home. I'm soooo confused. Is he ever going to be trained?? Please be truthful. . .does anyone have a Yorkie that is totally house trained?? |

| a hint when taking him out, dont walk around..stand in one spot with nothing around but grass, no tress, no piles of dirt, or fences, etc. just stand in one spot. and if you have a retractable leash, lock it a little shorter, and dont go anywhere til he goes. mine is getting a little better but if its not first thing in the morning, or right when i get home and i know she'll have to go right away..it may take her a bit. and that is the trick. dont pace and just stand there. keep encouraging him in a positive voice, "go potty". but patience is a virtue! good luck |

| I stayed out with him for an hour and a half one day, and....nothing. He will literally hold it until he comes in the house. I have tried taking his poop outside for him to sniff several times and it hasn't worked. I will have him stay in a small area while on the leash and he will sit or lay right next to my feet and look up at me like I'm an idiot. He just wants to try and eat or play with leaves on the ground or lick dirt. I've tried putting him in the crate, but he will still go to the bathroom in it. I went to take a shower one day and found poop and pee in the bathtub...gross. I have to watch him if the bathroom door is open now because he has done that several times now. He knows going in the house is bad. As soon as he does it he either hides or comes to me and wants me to pick him up. I love him to death and I'm not going to give up, but it is getting extremely frustrating. Thanks for everyones advice. Last edited by Cassie1; 05-27-2009 at 05:54 PM. |

| How old is your pup? Sounds like to me two things are going on. First, I think he is just prolonging being out. He is in the crate during the working day and again at night. Added up, that's a lot of hours for a puppy to be locked up. He probably is delighted to be free and is more interested in exploring than pottying. He knows he can hold it, then when fun time is over and you are back inside, his interest goes to his other needs. Secondly, I know from my own experience it is hard to teach potty for outside and pads, especially when you are trying to do them simultaneously. Try picking one and let him get that down before starting the other. Can you get a pen for him instead of a crate? Or, confine him to the kitchen or a small room with pads, I would do that first since you work, he can have his food, water, toys and would I think be a lot happier than crated so much of his time. I would really like to know how he is getting into your tub. Chloe is 9 mos and 6 lbs and she can't get into mine. These are just my thoughts, hope it helps. PS Yes, my Chloe is completely housetrained, but Willow is younger and is still working on it. Last edited by camile; 05-27-2009 at 07:23 PM. |

| Yorkies are VERY hard breeds to fully potty train..takes A LOT of patience.. Back home my mom has my one year old, Parker, and he knows to go outside, but he'd rather play..and he'll come inside and poo. Sometimes even goes on her bed.. Riley..my 4 month old,who I have now..is hard also..We're pad training him..and its a constant battle..but today..he has gone on the pads outside of his confinement 5 times.. Peed 5 times on the PADS! It was a miracle, and everytime he did it, we saw and praised him..and he knows, cause he got excited.. I know we will still have accidents, but for this one day..that everytime he has gone pee, to be on the pads.. Its just like a break through..amazing! So it does happen, but it takes time |

| I have 2 yorkies that we pad trained. The older one is about 15 months now, it was really hard when we got him around 3.5 months old, but like everyone said, consistency and PATIENCE. He is the best now, he does not go but the pad or when he is outside in the backyard and he sees my older maltese go, he now goes outside too. Now my new puppy who is 8 months now ( we got him a month ago) was never potty trained. We are having too many challenges with him. He will pee in his crate, drag his poopoo inside and eat it.. But, we are just being consistent and put him in the play pen, and we made his crate for sleeping at might a lot smaller so he can't move too much, so far, he has not had an accident inside his crate at night. When he is in the living room area which is all tiles, he knows to go on the pads, but once he gets on the carpet area, he just goes everywhere. However, we have seen a huge improvement in just a month.. Be patient, and buy lots of the enzyme cleaner. . They will get it..... Good Luck., |

| I got my Peka from a long friend who was tired of dealing with her pottying in the house. It was very sad. I asked if they had tried puppy pads and they told me that if they had to use puppy pads, they didn't want her, which was very sad. I didn't know what to expect when I got her home. However, I think alot of her issues was 1) I SWEAR she doesn't like wood floors--I dont know if its cold or what, but when she is on wood floors, she's more likely to potty and 2) they were home with her ALL day, (worked from home) and I truly believe she had something against them, kind of funny, kind of not. But they would take her out, and she would still go inside. However, I would take her out and she was fine, would go. We did have a few accidents, and every once in a while will still have a few accidents here and there but she is SOO much better than she was. They had never trained her on puppy pads and I put one out and she seemed to know and I came home and she had used it! I however did not keep her in the crate alot of the time like her previous family did. I rarely ever use it unless I'm at someone else's house and are leaving for a bit. She does great now in my room, and I leave a puppy pad out just in case. I know another issue is when she was fixed I personally believe they knicked her..something..and damaged her in a way that sometimes she just cannot hold it, for example, she gets really excited someone walks through the door and pets her, etc. I have to train PEOPLE now, DONT pet the dog, let me pick her up or take her directly outside, and she doesn't piddle. Works miracles with that situation, so I'm not sure if yours is fixed or not, but if so, that could be something to look into. Also maybe consider a trainer at someplace like petsmart that help with behavioral issues as well as potty training. And you the books for dummies are always good, not saying that you are, but very good ideas and they would have that at any Petsmart you go too, or should. Anyways, best of luck to you!!!! |

| Putting the poop outside is a good idea, but I think if you wipe up the pee with a paper towel and dab it in a spot outside it might work a little better because then they'll want to mark their spot outside. Good luck. It took us FOREVER to train Bandit, literally over a year, but we've had our new puppy for 8 days and she's gone outside more than inside so that's a good start! |

Yorkie Talker | Help!!! I guess I am resolving myself to the fact that I cannot housebreak JC. It's weird because as long as I am in the house, he never has an accident anymore and doesn't do anything anywhere, but if I leave him for any amount of time, he'll pee at least twice and potty if he has to. (Forget the pee pads. He just chews them up.) I understand that he may just be upset because I'm leaving him, but I can't take him everywhere I go even though I would like to. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks, Debra |

| I have had same problems. My yorkie would chew on pee pads as yours. I had advice from the forum members to use washable ones, they really don't do the job since you can expect my yorkie and other dog, maltese, to use more than one a day, and the washable ones were like $25-30 a piece. I would recommend the non-chewable ones from CVS pharmacy, the brand is called "Arm & Hammer". It is $5.99 for a pack of 10 and you can really see how they are made for chewing puppies. Good luck!
