| problem with yorkie and new grandchild I have a 3 yr old yorkie, our daughter had a baby boy 7 months ago and roxie (the dog) hates Tristan (the baby). We tryed all the smelling the new baby blanket , letting roxie smell the baby, having a tape recording of tristan crying, beleive me we have done it all!! Roxie has nipped at the baby more than once, not drawing blood just leaving red marks, but believe if she was given the chance she would bite him. We are all stressed out, we have to put roxie in the garage when the baby is here and listen to her bark and jump at the door for hours, plus the baby is starting to be on the floor and crawl and roxie just has a fit. We keep thinking it has to get better but it is not. What to do???? Roxie is like our baby but tristan doesn't deserve to be bitten and everyone is so stressed by the time they leave. They live about 45 min away from us so they will spend the nite and we are exhausted by the time they leave.Anyone have any suggesions?? Thanks, Julie |

I would suggest a playpen for her. One that Tristan cannot get his little fingers inside. Roxie needs to understand that she must be confined, but in the room, not in the garage. That would only make my girls jealous of the babies. I have twin two year old grandsons, so I can imagine how you are feeling. My son and daughter-in-law live 6 hours away, so, my girls don't see the babies that often. They have not nipped at them, but over the Christmas visit, they both barked and snarled at them, for the very 1st time, when the babies were running up to them. So, now, they must be confined when the babies are around, for both the babies safety, and my girls safety. I think, many of us Grandmothers go through this problem. | |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Have you tried giving Roxie treats when the baby is around and corrections for bad behavior? I would try putting Roxie on a short leash and hold her in your lap. When she is quiet and relaxed around the baby, give her a treat. When she barks tell her no, and put her on the floor (on a tight leash). You might have to adjust the logistics if the baby is crawling. Maybe time outs in another room might be better. I would put a bed and some toys in with her so she is not completely miserable. She doesn't get to come back if she's barking. If she is barking and scratching constantly, wait for a very short break, even a few seconds. Good luck!

My furkids Donating Member | I have a new granddaughter too! She is 9 months old now. My daughter and her husband live just down the road from me so, i get to see the baby all the time! I also babysit her a couple of times a week. When Eva, granddaughter, first started coming over the furgirls would go out of their minds....jumping and whining until I let them see the baby. I sit on the couch and let the pups come up to the baby and sniff her...and BOY do the sniff her!! They lick her head and if I let them...they would lick her face too. When I sit her on the floor to play the girls will lay on the baby's blanket just close enough to keep an eye on her but far enough away so she can't touch them. They are very curious about Eva...we are trying to teach Eva to pet the dogs and be "nice"...that doesn't work! LOL...She has gotten ahold of their hair and pulled. Both of the girls have snapped at her but, only when she tries to touch them. I think Eva thinks the girls are toys for her!! I don't know if they will ever get used to her but, they DO NOT go after her...they pretty much stay out of her reach. Maybe you could try holding the baby and letting your furbutt sit next to you and sniff the baby. Maybe this would help. Good luck..I know what you're going through

| My girls don't go after the twins either. They just get frightened when one of the boys runs up too them fast, when they are sitting in my lap. They are curious about the twins and follow them around, but just don't like it when they approach too quickly. My girls are older, 10 and 13 years, so it's been a long time since they have been around babies. (My youngest neice is 13.) Maybe Roxie would adjust to Tristan, if she felt safe, in a playpen, and not exlcuded by being put out in the gargage. Good Luck! |

| One thing is never Ever leave your dog within reach of the baby But you can at least have them in the same room by holding the baby and do not look at the dog at first walk around the room with him in your arms and drop treats every once in a while for the dog The dog is going to be occupied by the treats and will not be after your grandson Next step is have the child in the room in something like a playpen where the dog cannot get to him let the dog come in If he barks or tries to get to the baby ... he is put out wait a few mins and repeat the process You need to make the dog realize that good things will happen when the baby is around
