| ![]() Ciera was 13wks Wednesday. How cool! Wish you were still in Knoxville, we could have a playdate. We like it ok, the worst is all our family live in Virginia, and we don't really know anyone here so it gets pretty boring. I am a stay at home mom to Ciera and a 14mth old (as of today) boy. I will def. try that with her though. If I just try and leave her in her xpen she barks and whines to no avail. Really kills me when Hunter is trying to take a nap, and I tell her to hush and she barks that much more, so finally I have to let her out to get her to stop.

| ![]() I have 7 adults and teenagers so someone is always in some stage of being trained. Despite what people say aboout dogs not pooping in their bed a Yorkie will poop in its own bed and sleep in it. I set up 6 sections of the 8 section wire Xpen. I put water, bed, papers and they get a few treats of another brand of dog food (BTW, that is what I use as treats all time is different brand of cheap food...Iams daily dental does it for us) Everyone flies in and we don't hear a sound til they hear us in the morning. One little choc guy sleeps with us cause he does not know how little he is and gets in the middle of the morning exercises. Use the pen, make it as small as you want by doubling it back on itself, and gradually you might get her back in her crate if that is your goal..the pens are so great to travel with!! |

| ![]() The play/exercise pen I bought for Harley is really nifty bc I can attach his crate opening to the door opening of his play pen. I do that during the day so he has the choice of napping in his crate or playing/eating out in his play pen. If you can do that I would try that. That way she has a chance to walk out of her crate to poop in the night. Now if she still poops in her crate even while she has the opportunity to go on her pee pee pad then you have a problem I have no answer for! I hope this helps! Good luck! ![]() |

| ![]() Pooping in the crate is a sign that the crate is too large. My "Puppies for Dummies" book said that this is the number one sign that you have a crate too large for your puppy. But your pup is young. I would fully expect this to go away as your pup grows into the crate and gets better control of body functions. Here's a great page on Crate Training info: Quote:

| ![]() What an excellent link! Thank you! I have become increasingly frustrated over the last few days with the housebreaking thing. Deb had been doing so well in her penned area, but the last 3 days she has not done well at all. She takes her pee pad and crumples it in the corner and then pees and poops everywhere but on the pad. She does this both during the day and at night. I think that maybe she has too much room in there. I dont want to be inconsistant with her, but am afraid I gave up on the crate too soon. Her crate is the one that she arrived in, but maybe it is too big. Can anyone tell me what dimensions would be good for a 2lb Yorkie? I appreciate all the help!!! This is harder than pottie training my kids!!!

| ![]() A crate should only be so large that the puppy can stand, turn about, and lay again. No larger. Sounds messed up? It's HOME for a puppy! Few pups will poop so that they have to lay in it. They find that gross, and Yorkies in particular are hygenic dogs in my opinion. If it's possible, you may consider doing out-door potty training if the pads are simply not working. Chewey was supposedly "pad-trained" when I got him. The results were exactly like I have read a hundred others report on here: Poops on it (most of the time), pees near it. Chewey reminded me of a cat in so many ways, particularly his hygenic bent, so I thought perhaps he felt gross with the pads. I changed him to out-door training. Worked very well for me. I have a thread on here where I really detailed the process I used. It's something to consider. As for pad-training, there's little I can offer you. Good luck! |

| ![]() How do I find this thread that you mentioned? You seem very knowlegable!! I have tried taking her outside, but she is more interested in chasing bees and moths to worry about going potty!! Do you think I should keep her in her new kennel (I bought a smaller one tonight) both at night and during the day when I am not home until we get this potty thing under control? She has been staying in her penned area during the day? I really appreciate any advice you can give!!

| ![]() Hamoth is correct. your baby is tiny. i would find the smallest crate with a divider so you can adjust it with you baby. i wouldn't put a pee pad in there. to me it encourages them to use it .....especially if you using the same pads somewhere else in the house for training. my boy uses pads and outdoors. he took a while getting the pad down but i was consistent with it and soon he got it down. i crate at night only b/c i work in the day. i take him out first thing in the morning and thats how we started the outside part and he just caught on. hope this helps patients is the key( and lots of paper towels and spray). ![]()

| ![]() I bought the tiniest crate I could find tonight. I am going to put Deb to sleep in it tonight. You said you crate at night...what do you do during the day? Is your baby crated or in an enclosed area? I really appreciate all the tips!!!

| ![]() THat is what I do too. Deb is in a pen during the day with the pee pads. I just didnt know if for a few weeks it made more sense to keep her in the kennel during the day until she grasps the pee pad concept. As you can see, I am doubting all the things I have been doing and am just not sure where to go from here. I think I have been confusing my poor baby by trying to pee pad train her and train her outside at the same time. I think I will stick to the pee pads for now. What do you think?

| ![]() in the day i keep him in our laundry room with 2 babygates. he has his bed, food and water and i have a cardboard box with 2 pee pads. there small dogs so its enough room for him to walk around. my neighbor leaves hers in the bathroom with a baby gate. all depends on you. i've heard horror stories about x-pens and hangings and my boy didnt like a playpen i tried to use at first so laundry room works great.... try pads first then slowly introduce outside...worked for me
