Still pooping in her crate My baby, Deb is 12 weeks old tomorrow. She sleeps in her crate and still poops in it every night. She has her last meal around 6 pm and goes potty before bedtime which is about 11 pm and then she goes out about 5 am. She never wakes during the night and the vet said not to wake her if she was not waking herself. In the beginning I was waking her to take her to the pee pad, but she never went...she just thought it was play time. During the day when we are gone, she is in a penned area in the kitchen with a pee pad. She uses the pee pad every single time and when we are home with her she either uses the pee pad or goes outside. My question is this...should I let her sleep in her penned area? It is much bigger than her crate, but she has a bed in there that she loves and her pee pad? I am anxious to hear anyones suggestions!!! :animal36 |
don't know how I could help. Rebel poopied once in there and never did it again. Hopefully, someone else could give you advice on this. |

Taking her out in the middle of the night might be the alternative to pooping in the crate and will not go on forever,( thats what I tell myself to keep motivated) your pup is still young. Jack and Mandy sleep in the crate together and Jack had a few accidents in the crate because he was sick and had diarrhea but otherwise he will not poop in the crate. I dont do the pee pad. I only take them outdoors and crate them at night. They have a xpen in the kitchen and trying to get them to bark or use bells to let me know they want to go out. Are you going to eventually train her to go indoors or out??? Hope I was of some help to you :) Verena |
Crate or Pen?? I have tried getting her out in the middle of the night and she wont go....only plays. I am going to train her to just use the pads. I do take her outside, but again, she never goes out there....she is too busy playing. I live in CT and we have so much snow and such cold weather in the winter, that I think it will be easier for all of us if she is just pee pad trained. Do you think letting her sleep in her pen is a bad idea? I should def stick with the crate at night? Thanks for all your help!!! |

I know about those cold winters I am near Canada in upstate NY. Good luck and keep us posted. Verena |
Can you tell I am new at this? I havent put a pad in her crate....is that something that I should do? I never thought of that. She doesnt seem to mind her crate....she just poops in it :) As for her pen, it is very safe...she is in a very contained area in the kitchen with her doggie bed at one side and her pee pad at the other. I also had not thought of putting her crate inside the pen with the door open instead of her little bed. Both good suggestions. Thank you so much!! |

Update on Deb Well last night I gave it a shot. I put Deb in her penned area in the kitchen at bed time. I did not put her crate in there, because she is already used to her little bed that is in there during the day. She slept in it all night and never wimpered or cried. She got up at some point and did her business on the pee pad and then went back to sleep. I am wondering if there is even a need for her crate at all unless we are traveling. You are right, I do want her to eventually have the run of the house and when she is not in her pen, I keep the door to it open so that she can get to her pee pad when she needs it. She is doing really well. I am so new at this, that I want to make sure it makes sense to do it the way that I am doing it...so I dont have issues with her in the future. What does everyone think??? :animal36 |
If she feels better in the penned area , I would let her there . I only get mine used to the crate only for travel . They have an xpen . |
Thank you Gazou, I am glad to hear that your baby sleeps in a pen too. It's not that Deb doesnt like her crate, its just that she poops in it. This way, in the pen she poops on her pad and then she has a clean bed to go back to. I am going to continue putting her in the pen at night and see how she does. How old is your baby? She is beautiful!! |
Sounds like Deb is doing really well with the pee pad thing to be 12 wks. I am having a hard time with Ciera, she will poop on the pad but she will pee all around it. I have her in a xpen too, when I try to let her out just in the kitchen or in the living room where we are at and leave the door open to her xpen she will NOT go back to the pad, she goes in the floor where ever she is at!! I can't figure out how to make her go to it when she is out. |
Have you tried keeping her on a leash in the house when you have her out of the pen? That way you can keep a really close eye on her. When she starts to go...immediatly say NO and pick her up and take her to the pad.....then give her a very short lead to circle around and finish what she started!! That is what my breeder told me and it seems to be working....also, I know a lot of people will disagree with this, but I have a second pad out for her too. It is in the living room so that when she is far away from her pen (far to her is one room away) she has a designated area to go in and sometimes I think that she prefers not to go back into her pen when she is having her "freedom" time. As each day passes she uses the pad in the living room less frequently but she knows it is there. It only took us about a week of keeping her on the leash in the house before she started looking for the pad on her own. By the way, I noticed you are in Morristown, TN...I used to live in Knoxville!! How old is your yorkie?? :animal36 |

Yeah, we just moved here Jan 1st. We are from Virginia originally, my husband got a job down here so that is why we moved. Ciera is 13 wks old. Thanks for the tip, I will have to try the leash in the house thing. She will actually cry to get out of her xpen and when we let her out, she goes straight to the carpet in the living room and pees. GRRR Where in Knoxville did you live? How come you to move to CT? |
Ciera and Deb are the same age (I said she was 12 weeks last night but then realized I was wrong....today is her 13 week birthday :) ) If she is going the minute you let her out of the pen, try putting her leash on her immediatly and keeping her on the pad before you let her out! When I first brought Deb home, she would be sooooo excited when I first let her out of her crate or pen that she would not pee...she would be trying to climb up my leg instead of walking on her leash. Over the last few weeks she has calmed down some when I first get her out, she seems to know that once she goes, she gets to roam around the house :) Keep me posted on how Ciera is doing! I used to live in North Knoxville and went to school at UT. Do you like TN? We went to Florida after 10 years in Knoxville. My x-husband's job took us there. We moved to CT when my kids and I wanted a fresh start after my divorce. I am single mom with 3 kids and now a puppy :) We all love her very much!! |
