Keeping him on a leash at all times and training..saying Wait or Stay while you open the car door is really the only thing that will help prevent him from running off. My almost 2 year old Biggie runs off at times and he's been nutered. He runs off when we open our front from time to time and runs 2 houses down to see his Doggie Friend Toto that is typically leashed up in my neighbor's backyard during the day. Other than that he stays on our front lawn...but everyone is right, they should always be on a leash and training is key... we still have a little more work to do with Biggie.

Seems like an easy solution would be to make sure he isn't getting out of the car off leash, then he won't be able to run off.

I never, ever in all the years I had my Yorkie let her off leash. Even at night, I would go down the outside stairs with her... I was always nervous of predators. Recently, a neighbor let thier Jack Russel terrier out off leash and within seconds a coyote grabbed it... the end. Be careful- I would hate for something to happen to your dog... things can happen so quickly!!

We had a member on the Maltese forum I belong to just lose her Maltese to a coyote. Her dog usually went right out, peed on a bush next to the house and came right back. They were rushing to go out to dinner, so they didn't bother with a leash. It happened in just a few minutes.

Letting your dog roam loose in your car while you drive is dangerous to you, him, and other drivers. He could distract you into a car accident which could kill you or someone else, and he could be killed by the impact of being thrown across the car in even a minor wreck. I've read of yorkies dying from just jumping off the bed in this forum. Imagine what would happen if he smashed into the dashboard of your car?

Yes but if you have a strong recall and have had your dog by many roads, strange people and dogs then you know your dog will listen to you no matter what then I believe it's fine.

I agree if something happened your dog you wouldn't "feel any better" but it is because you didn't have your dog well trained and that means you cannot trust your dog. In my situation my dogs love, trust and respect me enough to know what I say is for their own saftey.

Even if well trained, wouldn't a little dog still chase a squirrel? I always had a leash on her in the car as well... they can always step on the window button and jump out when the window goes down (and she tried many times!). With my future pup I will crate her in the car in case there is ever an auto accident. I know, I sound crazy and super paranoid but I did have my Yorkie for 15 years and she wasn't killed in a senseless accident.

First of all, you should never have an unfixed dog or animal outside without some sort of restraint. These little guys are FAST and in an instant he can be gone and impregnating other female dogs, causing the shelter animal overpopulation to grow. Also, unfixed male dogs can smell a female from miles away and nothing can stop them from getting to her.

Second of all, yorkies are easily stolen... even right in front of you, someone can jump out, snatch and run. Not only that, there are predators like hawks that can easily swoop down and grab him before you would even know it. And what about stray dogs? They can come out of no where and could easily kill your little furbutt.

If you have a leash on him, you can easily prevent all of these instances. In addition to a leash, he needs to be trained the basic commands like sit, stay, come, etc and should listen no matter what distractions there are.
