| Housebreaking and ready to pull my hair out!!!! First a BIG HELLO, I am new here and appreciate any advise I can get... Here is my story. Gizmo is almost 5 months old and we bought him from a great breeder... We were advised by the breeder for Gizmo not to touch the ground until all shots were given, so we got a baby playpen and put bed on one end and pee-pad on the other end and this worked great, he used the pee-pad consistently, but hubby was ready to get the playpen out of the kitchen so we started crate training.... He does great in the crate no whining thank goodness don't think I could handle that too.... We set him up on a schedule based on the way he went on the pee-pad. I started on a Sat. non-work day at 7:00 am we take him out and for about a week he seemed to be getting the hang of going outside, seemed to love the praise and treats and then one day I took him outside and he didn't do anything and then brought him in and put him in the crate and turned my back and he pooped in the crate, I didn't catch him in the act so I just took him outside and then cleaned up the mess. Now this is a normal act for him, He no longer poops outside only in his crate, he does still pee outside, the thing is he only poops when we are not looking so I think he knows it is wrong. What do I do????? This has been going on now for over 2 weeks and can't seem to figure out how to correct the problem..... |

| FIRST- WELCOME! so glad you found us?? how much room does he have in his crate??? you need to use towels or a pillow or something to make sure he ONLY has enough room to lay down and turn around... then he won't poop in there.. he will learn to hold it because he won't want to poop where he sleeps. |

| Most dogs don't like to poop in their crates, but, believe me, some do, even when the crates are just the right size. I've trained both ways, but, am strictly pee pad now. What you need to do is pick the poop up out of the crate and put it outside where you want him to poop. Always make sure you have a treat on hand when he does go out to use the potty, and give him lots of praise. He's still young and will get the hang of it. My sons yorkie is a little over a year now and has a pee pad, they have an xpen set up for him and, when he has to go poop, he wants put in his xpen to go. They have to shut the door on it and leave the room before he'll poop. If he starts to poop, and he sees them walking back to his xpen, he will quit pooping. It's the funniest thing I've ever seen. This pup will cry if you get on to him and go sit in a corner, he does not like to be yelled at. Good luck on the training, it just takes time, consistency and patience. |

| i think they get confused. first you train them to go inside and they tell them to potty outside. i had this problem too. romeo thought he was supposed to use his wee wee pad and would hold it outside and run to the pad when he came back in.

| Thanks for the advise, I did make his crate smaller with the divider and have it what I consider too small, but he can lay down and turn around and that is about it. He loves to pee outside I can't understand the poop thing, why he didn't take to it like peeing. I took all day yesterday and watched him like a hawk in his crate and he went all day without pooping and finally he went outside late last night finally about midnight and I was taking him out every 30 to 45 minutes for about 20 minutes at a time just waiting, last night when he finally did go you would have thought we threw him a pooping party LOL!!! but I can't do this everyday so I hope the poop party encouraged him to keep it up. |

| Hello All! I'm new to the site, and I just got my little yorkie a week ago. He is 8 weeks old, and his name is Baylee. Baylee is a funny little guy. Our first week, he cried a lot at night while in his crate, but now he has stopped doing it as much and just goes to sleep. I feel really bad, because I have to leave him during the day in the crate. However, I put his favorite toy in it, as well as a puppy pad, on which he knows how to use. The problem is, he does not use the pad when he is not in the crate. For 3 days straight, he would tinkle on it faithfully. Now, he grabs the pad with his mouth and carries it around the house. He has started to go potty in the bathroom, because that is where I flush his accidents. I really don't want to take him out to walk yet because he cannot have his second set of vaccination shots until he is 9 weeks old and I don't want him to get a virus. I know...we have issues! What do you suggest on potty training? As soon as I leave home, I feed him, and he goes to potty like 20 minutes later...where I can't see him...Or sometimes he'll use the puppy pad, if he hasn't dragged it around the house...Please...I welcome your suggestions...Oh...the breeder was feeding him and his brother and sister Iams for puppies...is that a good food for him? |

| Baylee is really young to expect a lot, but be consistent in his training. You should ask about IAMS for puppies on the YT Health & Diet board. There a probably better foods, but you need to transition slowly with a mix of new & old food. Good luck with your new puppy.

| Thank you! I know I'm expecting a lot of him, with his barely being 9 weeks old...I just thought I had a genius puppy for a couple of days because he went to potty on the puppy pad...Then he stopped. Thanks for the advice, and I'm open to any other suggestions...I will look the food choices up... |

| I am new to this, too. When I first got my Pebbles I experienced the same thing. She was great going on the Pee Pee pad then we started having accidents. Then I read a site on potty training and it made all the difference. I was giving her too much territory. Now I only give her a small area at a time. Then when there is no more accidents, you slowly start giving them more area. It has been really working for Pebbles. So I started in the kitchen... she hung out with us in the whole kitchen, when I wasn't with her she was in her Xyard in the kitchen (with a pee pad in a litter box, a bed, toys, and a bed.) Then I added sitting on the sofa with us, when she didn't want to stay on the sofa with us, she went in her yard. Then I gated the office. She stays in there with us and our other dog and every hour I take her outside to potty (you could alway take her to his pad at the stage.) If she didn't potty, she went into her yard. She either went on her pad or I would take her back outside to go. After she goes in either spot, she would get to go in the office again to play with Oreo. Just recently I added the family room and kitchen as an area to hang out with the family but I can't leave her unattended. If we are not with her she goes back into her yard with the pee pee pad. I still take her out to go outside. This is working really well. She has very little accidents, and if she does it's my fault usually because I didn't follow the routine because I got too busy doing something and wasn't paying attention. |
