| Leash/Walking Question Hi everyone. Just joined the site a few weeks back when we got our new puppy, Maya. Lots of interesting posts- some informative, some interesting, and others that just plain make you think, "At least she doesn't do that." Wondering if anyone can relate... Our 15 week old puppy is walking pretty well on the leash during the day. She stops a lot, but starts back up with a little encouragement. However, when I walk her in the morning it's still dark out, and she won't get started. She sits and looks around, but doesn't budge- even with the same encouragements that work during the day. In another twist, if I carry her to the end of the street in the morning and then start back home, she practically runs the entire way. It's still dark out, mind you. (She generally does better on the way home on every walk, so this isn't all that surprising). I'm interested if anyone can relate or has had the same thing, i.e. a puppy that's afraid of the dark! |

| Maybe she is a bit unsure in the dark , you are doing well picking her up and then letting her walk home,

| Good way to handle that she not sure at all and what your doing will help build confidence that you are there to help her. Now that said next time you go to the vets..... have the dogs eyes checked. I am wondering if she got low light vision problems and may just may have eye concerns.... Vet may say no as the young dog with cataracts do not show them easily but keep an eye on it and if night vision and being concerned at night continues ask to see an eye specialist. At this point she still getting to know the world and may never have had to deal with low light and outside at dark and it sounds and looks strange so she needs time to learn. What I have said about eyes is just so you can watch and if there is a problem catch it early. JL |

| We just got a new puppy, who is 5 months old. Whenever we put him on his leash to walk him outside, he just will not move. He just stands there, looking at me. But when I take him off the lease he runs around and chases and plays with the other dog. But he won't pee-pee or poop outside. He also won't use the puppy pads. We just got him yesterday, so I'm sure he is still adjusting. Anyone have any suggestions on how to potty train. We would like him to use the bathroom outside, but we just have no idea what to do! |

Once he gets used to that pick up the leash and follow him around at the end of it. Then once he is used to that suggest with a great deal of happy tones to come with you as you back away from the dog. Once he is moving turn and go along with him in the direction of your choice. If he stops you stop and encourage him to move along with you. This will take days or maybe a week to get him from pulling the leash around behind him to walking with you. It a process not a one day event. JL | |

| My dogs never had such a problem but i think you should give her some time. She walks back home because you have showed her the way and that there's anything there that could harm her. Or maybe she's just doing it because she wants to get to the safety of her home as faster as she can.Im not sure what to say but give her another 2-3 weeks and try to show her (during the day and night) that you're there and you protect her.

Here's what i did with my pup: 1.Never take off the leash unless you are in a safe place clear of cars and he cant run away cause if he does run away wont get back unless you run and catch him 2.Dont take him out with another dog because he might not feel good with other dogs (of the "pack") 3.Feed him and give him water right before you go out (you can give him some water when you go back if you were running) 4.Don't go long walks if he doesnt pee-pee. Only small walks really near the house so that when he pees out you can congratulate him and go further away as reward. 5.When you take him down 2nd time (after he had already peed once) and he doesnt pee again get him up and leave him with the leash only in one room. He'll get this to be the "punishment" for not peeing out and the next time will be ok. Do the same for when he poops Sorry for the big and double post.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | He's still pretty young. Just be sure to make the walks fun. Bring a toy. Bring treats. You don't want to drag him along and make it a bad experience. I wouldn't fret too much. It just takes time to build up their confidence. Sometimes it helps to walk with another dog.
