| Training with Potty Pads I am training my 4 month old yorkie puppy with potty pads. The vet reccomended that I cover his entire pen (kind of like a playpen for a baby) with potty pads and then gradually remove them one at a time to teach him to go on the pads. However, we have been doing this for ten days and he has yet to pee or poop in the same spot! He goes everywhere in the pen; no uniformity at all. Also..the bigger problem is that he is eating the potty pads! He gets plenty of excercise and has lots of toys around to chew on, so I have no idea why he wants to eat the pads...i'm sure this is not good for him! Has anyone tried this method before? I've ruled out crate training so this method is what we'll try to stick with. Thanks for the help! |

| That's how I always train mine. It works, keep at it. I use the washable potty pads though. They can't shred them.

| my lil guy is 5 months and i started with potty training outside... but he HATES to poop outside... so i thought i would meet him in the middle and do potty pads... i'm wondering if its a little too late in the ballgame to make this switch? if i do should i ONLY do pee pads and completly forget bathroom breaks outside? i don't want to confuse him |

| We have always used both methods. Only in the winter time do I only stick with the pee pads till they are old enough to go outside. As its so cold here for the younger dogs. They get the idea to mainly go outside but they have the back up of the pee pads if they can't hold it. If they can hold it they will because they don't want there area soiled. You have to give them time to get it all worked out. You will have times they will do so good and then back slide. It will come around and they will get it. The paper pads you just have to try to catch him shredding it and then tell him "NO" and give him something else to chew on. Its also a training lesson.

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | I disagree on this one. I think in my opinion they need two separate surfaces to learn. for instance when I had my litters, I lined the pen with a hard plastic material much like the plastic you use for desk chairs to roll on. 1/2 of the pen I would line with pads, I used paper except for the ones that chewed them, then I would use cloth ones. Once they got it, and they were set free (to one room), I placed many pads all over, because they are like kids and wait till the last minute because they are too busy playing then its like they have to go instantly and forget where the pads are. Thats why I had them placed all over. Slowly as they hit the pads and not the floors I would decrease the number of pads and eventually give them free roam. Almost all of my babies were potty broke pretty good by the time they went to their new homes. Just a thought. Everyone has different ideas. |

| Training and Pet Sitters Thanks for all of the help and suggestions for training with potty pads! One more question... I have been researching pet sitters for an upcoming trip...does anyone know of a really great company that you've had experience with? Moose will stay with a friend that works during the day so I want to have someone come in to visit and play with him; I was even considering the overnight pet sitter. I HATE to leave him but my veterinarian thinks boarding him at a young age would be stressful so I want the absolute best option for Moose. I am very new to pet sitting so any advice for/against it would be great! Thanks! |

| I disagree with placing anything in a crate for a dog to pee on at all for any reason. Having had quite a few dogs, I feel this teaches a dog to keep his place dirty. I have had to break quite a few dogs of this "dirty crate" habbit and some were never able to be broken of it. I much prefer a crate inside of a gated area or ex-pen approach with a pee pad area inside the confined area. Yes, there will be some cleaning involved until they learn to hit the pad area but it is better than trying to teach a dog to be clean when it is used to being dirty. This is just my opinion but it is a very strong one. If I see a puppy who has been allowed or trained to pee on papers inside a crate when I go to look at it as a potential puppy of my own, I walk away. That is how strongly I feel about it after what I have been through in the past. I don't care how beautiful the puppy is. |
