I disagree with placing anything in a crate for a dog to pee on at all for any reason. Having had quite a few dogs, I feel this teaches a dog to keep his place dirty. I have had to break quite a few dogs of this "dirty crate" habbit and some were never able to be broken of it. I much prefer a crate inside of a gated area or ex-pen approach with a pee pad area inside the confined area. Yes, there will be some cleaning involved until they learn to hit the pad area but it is better than trying to teach a dog to be clean when it is used to being dirty.

This is just my opinion but it is a very strong one. If I see a puppy who has been allowed or trained to pee on papers inside a crate when I go to look at it as a potential puppy of my own, I walk away. That is how strongly I feel about it after what I have been through in the past. I don't care how beautiful the puppy is.
