| Max hates walking in a leash Ok, so I have this little problem with Max. He is still just 3 months old and we have only had him for 2 weeks.. He loves being outside walking next to me. Also when we walk with his harnes on he is ok walk next to me sniffing stuff... BUT when I put the leash on to walk him with the harnes he turns on me. He either sits down and wont move or he goes down on all four and refuses to walk.. I have tried to lure him with goddies & treats.. Praising him when he walks ( maximum 10 steps and then he sits down again) but is does help.. Are we already having a powerstruggle? Can anyone suggest what I should do? I dont want to be pulling his little feet to blood because he hates his leash.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all |

| Im leash training too. And she will also follow me if not on a leash, but wont with she is on the leash. But I'm too scared to not have her on a leash outside because she is fast! What I am doing is just taking her outside to potty right now. Im not trying to walk her or anything. I waited until she had to potty, then put her outside while holding the leash. At first I had a cloth leash, but all she did was chew on it. I got a retractable leash, pretty long, and let it all the way out and stand there while she runs around doing her business. It seemed to help a lot. I just dont think she likes to be next to me when going potty.

| Do you have a friend who has a leash trained dog that you can walk with? I know it help a lot that Boo was already trained and he took the lead whenever we went out with Gracie. She just wanted to follow him and after a few times she started figuring it out. Another trick I've used is to carry them away from home a little ways and get them to walk back. It seems they have an easier time with walking to home then away from it. Then lots of treats and praise when they make it back home.

| Just saw this same problem on "Caesar's Way!" Here's what he did: Put the dog on the leash and carried her away from her home. Once they got about 2 blocks away, he put her down and DID NOT PULL! He said that pulling the dog is what deters them from walking on the leash. The dog sat for about a minute, but then got up, started walking, went potty, etc. Also, he said that by taking the dog away from the home, the leash will be the dog's connection to returning home (motivation to walk). On a side note, my Yorkie is funny about walking on a leash too. She's wont walk on my left side AT ALL and doesn't like when the leash touches her. Try just taking the dog outside of the house and see what she prefers. Also, have you tried putting a regular collar on her? I know that harnesses are "better" for small dogs, but maybe try a regular collar and she'll feel like she's being less controlled? Just a thought. Let us know how it goes! And good luck! |

| When I first started using a leash with Max when he was a puppy, he would sit down and not move too. I think part of it is just b/c they don't know what that thing restraining them is, plus, sometimes the leash is not taut and drapes onto their back and it scares them. It took awhile, but he's great now.

| Myah did the same exact thing. What I did, was to attach her harness then put a lightweight (ferret) leash on it and let her drag it around the house. When she was finally ok with that, we put let her drag it around outside. Then we would put a regular leash on her and started just holding above her so that it wasn't pulling at all. We are now using a retractable leash and she is doing fine on it. |

| This morning I put the harnes and leash on Max and let him just walk around the field without me holding the leash.. He seems to be ok with that.. On the way home I decided to pick up the leash and he was pretty much ok with it walk back home.. You guys ROCK.. Thanks for all ur suggestions.. No doubt I have more questions coming!! I have to say having a yorkie pup is a lot different than a german shepard pup!! |
