Donating YT 500 Club Member | bitter apple question I had my hubby pick up some of this spray this morning. I really am having a hard time getting Guinness to calm down. This morning, I had him sitting on my lap trying to calm him down and had his chewy holding it so he could chew on it. He'd chew and seem okay then turn around and start biting my fingers, I'd move him back to the chewy and it went on a few times. Then all of a sudden he took a big snap at my finger and drew blood I was so shocked, washed my finger and put a band aid on and set him down. So, I'm adamant about working with him. How much do I use and how often??

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Hi Deenie How were you going to use the bitter apple? On your hands, to discourage biting? I wouldn't spray it directly onto Guinness - especially around his face. This product is more for making objects unappealing to the chewer. You might try a spritzer bottle w/water. When he bites, you can spray him in the face with that. Many people have success with this method, but I did not. Abigail loved it! LOL If I'd continued with that, she'd have surely drowned, as stubborn as she can be, sometimes

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Oh no, I wasn't going to spray it on him! I was going to spritz it on my fingers before I pick him up. The water sprayer worked on my cats, I wonder if he would pay attention to it. With my luck, he's gonna LOVE the bitter apple and think the water spraying is 'fun'. lol thank you for your reply. I think I'm just nervous training him.

| you can put it on your hands.. just be careful not to put them in your mouth but when Layla would get carried away i'd just turn her over on her back (showing that i'm the dominant one and she has gone too far) and hold her there until she stopped squirming... then i'd let her back up and just go back to normal.. it worked really well for us. |

YT 500 Club Member | We used the Bitter Apple on anything that our baby tried to chew. However, your hands are a different situation. You need to show your little teether that you are not a chew toy. When your baby tries to bite you, take her by the muzzle and "take her down". That means, gently put her on her side and hold her down, also gently but quickly and firmly. This is the method her mother would use in the litter. Also, redirection for chewing, just as you were doing, giving her something that is okay to chew. You are doing the right thing, but these little guys, are teething and it hurts. Your baby is a toddler, and toddlers are trainable! Good luck!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | When you held her down did she still try to bite you? It seems to just really make him angry and he'll bite more. I put him on his back quite often. I did yelp this morning a few times while I was holding him and he'd bite, and it DID get his attention. I will keep up with that. I really really appreciate all the feedback.

| I tried the bitter apple on my hands with Rockie with no success. When your baby does the biting I would say "ouch" or "no" and put him in his room, xpen or wherever he knows he is away from you for a few minutes.

| Right now I have two under a year. The sharp yelp and a quick "No bite" has worked on both of them. There are still moments of forgetfulness in the mist of a ruckus, but they do listen. Good Luck. Joanne |

| I had a heck of a time with Gracie biting when she was a puppy. Bitter apple did nothing. The only thing that sent a message was to stop what we were doing, stand up and turn my back to her. How would you feel if someone did that to you? Consistency is key. Eventually the biting will stop if you use this technique and use it consistently.

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Dena, Just came back to check on this thread, and saw I misspelled your name! LOL I'm so embarrassed. Gracious of you not to point it out . I have a great niece, Nadine, whom we call "Deenie", and I guess she's on my mind a lot lately. They lost their home in a fire over the holidays .

| What if the hot sauce accidently got into his/her eye or even yours? Yikes! I do use hot sauce on corners of my furniture. My Pommie enjoys Bitter Apple so I had to come up with something else or have all my furniture ruined. It's worked so far. |
