you can put it on your hands.. just be careful not to put them in your mouth
but when Layla would get carried away i'd just turn her over on her back (showing that i'm the dominant one and she has gone too far) and hold her there until she stopped squirming... then i'd let her back up and just go back to normal.. it worked really well for us.
