| Potty Training Hi Everyone, My name is Lavonda and I'm new to this thread. I will be picking up my new baby girl Yorkie on Jan 20th. Before I bring her home I would like to know if anyone can help me with some tips on potty training, and where to begin. Thanks, Lavonda |

| Hi Lavonda. The one helpful tip that I have learned along the way is that potty training is quicker and easier if you bring your pup outside on a leash. I brought my pup home at 12 weeks of age and introduced him to the harness right away. I also purchased a retractable leash so that he could sniff the ground and move around more comfortably. This technique, along with going outside many many many times during the day did do the trick. I still always am aware of when Remi needs to go out. I have learned his schedule and am aware that most times he needs to relieve himself after he plays and always shortly after he eats. In addition, I am encouraged him by saying "hurry up" and now he seems to know what I expect . Lots and lots of praise helps too!! Another tip that I could suggest is that as your pup gets the idea of relieving himself outside after all of the praise you have given him, start bringing him other places away from the house so that he will not get used to just one area. Lots of good luck! |

| Potty Training I think I'm getting a little scared by the posts of the others that are having a hard time with potty training. I feel like I just don't know where to start, especially since I will be working as well. I appreciate the advice, I'm going to need it. |

| Don't feel overwhelmed...I have a 16 week old puppy and I do recommend crate training. He's been very easy with the potty training due to the crate. Also, it's very comforting for him. If we leave we put him in the crate with a blanket over it and he calms right down. If I leave the apartment to go get the mail and leave him out for 30 seconds....he's barking up a storm. I really suggest walking her so she's tired, then putting her in the crate so she associates that with calming down. ENJOY THE PUPPY |

| Hi there and Welcome to YT Potty training is a long process, so no need to feel overwhelmed or that your not doing enough. I think the training you choose should be based upon your working/daily schedule. My Meka is 10 mo's now and we've always pad trained her. I work from 7:30 to 4:30 so she is at home all day. I have a townhome, so my washroom downstairs is her room. Complete w/ pads, bed, toys, water bowl, etc... and I use a babygate to confine her to that area during the day and it works for us. Even when we got her at 9 wks, I used a playpen with the same set up (I'd leave the TV on for her though, to help with her learning to be alone) and she did fine (until she started climbing out...lol). She kinda just naturally went to the pad. Of course she had accidents when away from it, but by telling her NO and showing her the correct place to potty...she was able to get it. She does also go potty outside when walked, I think that comes pretty natural for em though Im by far no expert buy you can always feel free to PM me

| My best advice is to not get discouraged. Ask lots of questions to find out how others did it, but even if you do everything right and she is 6 months old and pees on the floor in front of you like it's nothing, just be aware that sometimes it clicks one day and they just get it. Keep her in a routine as best you can. Then, as her body matures enough for her to hold it she will know what the right thing to do is. Good luck! I successfully trained two to go outside, no pads. They ring a bell to go outside. Loki was 10 months and Sammy was about 17-18 months, although we didn't get her until she was a year old so it took us about 6 months. Once day she just rang the bell and she has been ringing it since. We thought that day would never come!

| All I can say is you need a lot of patience. I prefer to train mine to go outside too.

| Hi Lavonda, I just got my first puppy in Aug, he was 3 months old and pad trained. I did not want him pad trained so I had to pull the pads that he came home with and bite the bullet. I suggest that you take him outside in the same spot every time on a leash at first while you are outside you need to say "go potty" and keep telling him to go in a nice voice, (make sure you always have a treat in your pocket) as soon as he goes you say "good potty" and give him a treat. I did this and he leared so quickly, then I realized that if I did not watch him closely he would go by the back door and then run to another part of the room and pee, I really had to watch him, so I decided to put 2 bells by the back sliding door and would watch him closely then when I saw a certain movement that I knew I would say go potty and I would ring the bell and open the door, I tell you within 1 week he had it down. I always gave a treat, after he was done and praised him. Good Luck! |

| I wanted to pad train at first because I won't be home in the morning, since she'll be eight weeks when I get her she won't be able to hold it in the crate. I keep hearing do it this way and do it that way, I also think that it's to cold outside right now. I'm just going to suck it up and try crate training. |

| You have a point, cause one thing I did not mention is that it was easier because it was in the summer, if I were doing this now, I am sure I would not have much luck. Remember this, if you crate train and pad train since you are going to be out of the house for a long period of time, you can always re train in the summer to go outside, and then keep the pads out when you are gone, I would just make sure that the pad is by the back door or the door that you go out.

| You could also get a crate and put what's called an ex pen around it. I'm gettin my yorkie pup next week and that's what my breeder suggested because im gone for 8 hours of the day. Just remember to put down pee pads in the pen while you're gone. |

| Welcome to YT! I tried pad training first with two of my puppies and it was not successful for me at all. I wanted them to be able to eliminate inside on the pad and outside as well, but they decided they wanted to potty on the pad, on the dining room tile, ect. I'm still trying to "un train" them from going inside to outside and it's working pretty well. I made some potty bells for my door and they are really starting to hold it until we go out. They still use the pad but not as frequently!! Good luck with the potty training! It is a process, but it can be done and only gets easier! |

| Since I've told my breeder about my situation and let her know that I will be working she told me that crate training would still be best. I know it's going to be tough at first but I'm totally ready for it. I can't wait to go shopping for her next weekend. Can anyone suggest any treats for training? |
