| Pigs ears, watch a yorkie go nuts LOL Do any of you give your babies pigs ears? I bought them for the first time about 6 weeks ago, and OMG the boys went nuts, I bought two one for each but of course they both wanted the same one. I never saw Garrett carry on like that, he whined, he begged, he stole it and then the race was on. Two hours + in chewing and carrying on. Less than a buck each, kept them really going, now I buy them each one about every two weeks, never seen dogs carry on like that. |

| I heard that pig ears and raw hieds are bad for dogs. My Pitbull always got diareah after eating those. I never tried it with Milo.

| I have had many different breeds of dogs and have used rawhide quite often with all of them only 1 ever got the runs. I think that it depends on the dogs digestive system and how sensitive they are. My Sprocket loves its the only time he sits on my lap nicely without molling my face. I give him some everynight for about 45 min so I can brush him. |

| Gracie loves pig ears too but I was told you are not to feed them to small dogs especially unless its only in moderation. If a small dog such as a Yorkie devours one of those in say a day it will take almost 2 days to digest it because its not the easiest thing on their digestive systems. I just buy a whole pig ear take some sharp scissors and cut it into smaller pieces and give Gracie a piece and save the rest for other days. If I give her the whole thing she ends up eating almost half...she wont stop!!! |

| Pig's Ears, yes.....BUT COW HOOVES SMELL SOOOOO BAD!!!! We bought Sully a pig's ear when we first brought him home, at 10 weeks old. It took him about a week to finish the pig ear. We were amazed and so bought him another. The next one only took four days. Then two, now it only takes like 45 minutes for him and that pig ear is GONE! We spoil our baby boy, but we can't afford giving him one of those every day, haha! He only gets one maaaybe once a month now. He loves a good rawhide bone and it lasts him nearly a week for about the same price, so we go with those. I heard that the only ways that rawhide bones are bad for our pups are b/c 1. they promote bad breath, and 2. when they get down to the last pieces, they can choke on them. I'm careful to throw his bone away when it gets small enough to mostly fit in his mouth. (But I have to throw it away when he's not looking, haha!) COW HOOVES - on the other hand, stink so darn bad!!! We bought him one once, by reccomendation of a friend and we had to THROW IT AWAY! It smelled like a dirty barn (my husband said it smelled like "butt-crack") OMG it reaked! It was smelling up our whole house. But he loved it. And what was worse, he smelled just like it after chewing on it for a while. Oh well, we tried and will NEVER buy one of those things ever again!!!

| The other day my boyfriends mom gave Gracie half of her puppies pig ear...I was a little apprehensive on giving it to her...I let her have it for about a half an hour and she LOVED it...she didn't get any pieces off, but I was told NO rawhide but I was wondering if the pigs ears are bad for them as well has anyones vet told them??

| Maggie Loves Her Pig Ears I was told that pig ears were the only thing you should give your Yorkie for natural animal part chewing. So, I got some for Maggie (ten weeks old) and she will spend hours working on one corner. She has been working daily on it for over a week, and still the only part missing is the tiny tip of the ear. They say the pig ear is great for use as a teething device. So far I agree. Here she is in a picture we call "I'm Not A Pig", "I Still Have The Ear". |

| salmonella? Seems like I read somewhere they could get salmonella from them, before reading that, I was giving both my Yorkies pigs ears. Last week, they both turned up sick - vomiting & diarrhea so I took them away from them (I also had to take them both to the vet to get a shot to stop the vomiting & diarrhea). The vet & I aren't sure what may have caused it (he checked their stool & didn't see anything) - so, it's tough to say if pigs ears caused or not. Kim |

| Hi Kim, I'm a retired (recently) Health Official. Salmonella can be found on almost anything. That is why it's important to wash your hands. The pig ears may have had it. If you buy them from a reputable company, they will probably have been cooked and cured better than some cheap outfit. You may have to pay a little more for them, but you will save in the long run--in the way of Vet bills. Maggie hasn't had one bit of problem. I also have two heelers and they love them as well. I hope your babies are doing better. Just remember that Salmonella can be transmitted very easy by just skipping the ole handwashing. Also, if they are not housebroken, then where they had the poo accident (hopefully on tile), you can use an antibacterial spray or mop solution to kill any bacteria left on the floor. Nope I'm not a germ freak, just experienced in the field of bacteria. |

| Thanks for the info! Thanks. I'm still not sure if the pigs ear thing did it or not, but I tried to get rid of anything that I thought it might be. Also, we have a lot of birds out in our Magnolia tree who poo poo all over the place - we try very hard to be sure that the babies don't get into it & we also try to take the hose to the sidewalk & the deck, but I guess you can't catch every little things. My babies are doing much better, it just scared the heck out of me - I even stopped feeding them the wet food & switched them to dry only. Thanks again, Kim |
