| Sad I feel a bit sad that my Lilly has her tail docked. I know it is a breed standard but am not sure why it is decided that some dogs need to have body parts removed! Or their ear surgically altered. My preference would be for the natural. |

| Both are cute, IMO, but long tails for the win! Jax has a long tail and I LOVE it. I was so naive (or stupid) when I got him that I did not even know they were "supposed" to be docked. I thought dogs with short tails were born that way for the longest time.

| I have one with a tail and one without. I think that docking should be made illegal. I'm sure it eventually will be, but it will just take time for the standard to shift and for people to accept it. Docking is no longer needed and I think it's unnecessary. I love full tails I'll post a pic when I get home today of Khloe's full tail!

| I understand that is a breed standard - Jack's tail is docked and it is a cute little stub - honestly, I think it is too short... so I have already contacted a breeder and she knows that the sister we get for Jack will not have her tail docked. As far as dewclaws, yes, it looks painful but I do agree with having them removed as a puppy as they can cause problems if left on (can get snagged on something and tear and/or if the nail is not cut down, it will grow and curl around and grow back into the skin).

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I like them docked, but I prefer the way many show breeders dock them longer. I think just cutting the thinnest part off; the part most likely to break is the safest. Even in countries where docking is outlawed, working dogs are allowed to have their tails docked. There is much variation in natural tail length and girth, and some Yorkies have a very narrow tail that could easily be broken if left intact. A yorkie with a very thick tail probably will never have a problem, but we must remember, that they have not yet be selectively bred for thick tails, so there is much variation. They are looking at the safety issues in Europe, where docking has been outlawed for years, for example: Quote:

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Nancy that is an incredibly important point. As an adult if the tail is injured then surgery is required with all the attendant risks and the tail will end up getting docked because there is no way to immobilize a moderately long tail so that it will heal after surgery. Aesthically there are some breeds I prefer the docked tail on ; Yorkies I love with a natural tail or a tail docked to medium length. I am not fussy on the really short docked tail on a Yorkie. For my breed the BRT I absolutely adore the docked tail, I have one of each; that being natural long tail and one docked tail. It is hard because if I want to compete in Europe I will have to get a puppy with an undocked tail. I think that the standards should allow for a dock or undocked tail. I wince every time our long tailed Zoey slams that 2ft long tail into doors/walls, and cupboards not to mention when it whips into your legs... awweeeee.

| To be honest, I think worrying about tail breakage is a little over-dramatic. Sure, it can happen. But then let's just dock all dogs tails... because ANY breed of dog CAN break a tail. And lots of dogs are not supposed to be docked have skinny tails, so let's just dock theirs too while we are at it. I dunno, I think docked tails are cute too, and obviously I'm a little biased but I just simply don't see a point besides aesthetics (which is fine, but let's admit that it's because of that and not try to make up excuses for us doing it). People crop ears too - and there is NO good reason for it other than looks. That's fine - I, too, prefer the look of a cropped Doberman to be honest. But that's all it is... aesthetics... let's not try to make it into something bigger than it is and dig for reasonings. I don't necessarily agree with it being banned though, I think there are enough dog laws, and to take away someone's choice to do so is almost like allowing them to take away other things too. But JMO. I could be wrong. I don't know how it's gone over in Europe. Btw, Jackson's is curled upwards most of the time... it's not just like sticking straight out.

In regards to your question, I love it both ways but I saw a video of tail docking (on this website) that has haunted me since I saw it. I don't recommend watching it because it will make you sick. Max has his tail docked and dewclaw removed. I hate thinking that he ever had to suffer through that but he is a happy, playful, beautiful boy. I think this is a touchy issue.

| Silly or dramatic or not, I worry about tail-breaking or lacerating in a reckless dog such as my Tibbe is so I am very glad his was docked as a puppy. He, as a Yorkie will never have the sturdy tail of a Lab and the very reason they started docking the thinner Yorkie tale which is not carried over the back or curled but stretched out, was due to the many injuries the dogs sustained. When Tibbe can, he would go under lawn equipment or the low fence to chase a squirrel or cat in his yard. He doesn't know a Yorkie is no longer considered a ratter farm-dog and he would go through or under anything to catch his prey. Plus, I like the trim look of a docked tail.

| At one point, tail docking was thought to prevent rabies, strengthen the back, increase the animal's speed... and it also prevented injuries when a dog was working, such as ratting, so a rat could not latch on to the tail. Our modern day Yorkies, most of them anyways, are not "professional" ratters or working dogs. I have no issue with working dogs having a tail docked, actually I have no issue with any dog having a tail docked really. I prefer natural yes, but I have no problem with someone preferring docked either, all preference. I just don't think "Tail breakage" is a good reason and wish people would just admit it's for aesthetics. My finger can break real easily, should we chop those off too, just to prevent it in case it MIGHT break or need to be amputated? Italian Greyhounds have very thin tails, they are not docked... they could break easily. I am just saying all dogs can break a tail, and if it were that big of an issue, I think ALL dog breeds (except those bred for specific usage of their tail-such as Westies) would have been docked long ago. But they are not.
