| Yorkie Runt Not Gaining Weight This is Dixie and Flips second litter on 10/31/13. She had 5 babies and we lost one at birth due to the placenta delivering before the pup. All pups were born over 4 oz except the deceased and a little boy named Chip. His birth weight was 2.2 oz. Once he got warmed all up he didn't let the bigger ones get in his weigh of nursing, or so I thought. We ended up at the vet on Friday to be taught how to tube feed because he dropped to 1.8 oz. Tube feeding a few times Friday and he was back at nursing on Dixie. He held his weight all day yesterday at 1.85. This morning he is down to 1.75, I didn't tube feed him every few hours because when I went in to feed he was nursing. Any and all helpful suggestions are extremely wanted. I have been working very hard on the litter and lost several hours of sleep to see they all thrive. This morning he is still trying to nurse. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Sorry you are so worried about your little runt. I myself have never had a reason to tube feed so I am no help there. But I would suggest that if his weight is down that much from skipping the tube feeding that please do it. Even if it is just a few times per day. Also I would suggest that you have a few one on one feeding with just mamma a few extra time per day. By doing those two things he should gain and sustain a proper weight gain and will more than likely do very well after a week or two.

| I think this thread needs to be moved to the breeder section, I will report it to be moved. I'm not an expert, but I am thinking you need to tube feed this baby around the clock, once they go downhill, it's very hard to revive them.

| I also think you need to supervise his nursing, let him nurse from the best flowing teat. Need to supervise to make sure he's not being pushed aside from his bigger littermates. Maybe even give him alone time w/mom b4 all the other pups nurse. The mom can also be pushing him away if she suspects that he is weak...hope he'll be ok, you need to be tube feeding this baby.

| Congratulations on learning this life saving technique!! Tube feeding is precise, and you can deliver exactly as much as you need to deliver to help this baby survive! I would do supplemental tube feedings....feeding him every 4 hours, and allowing him to nurse between the tube feedings. If you are using the formula I use, you are giving between 14-16 cal. per cc....you give 1 cc for every oz of babys weight. Always make sure the formula is warm, or he wont digest it....the formula I use is: 1 can Just Born with Colostrum 4 oz Pedialyte 1 raw egg yolk 1 cup live culture yogurt 3 tbsp Dr.Millers Pet Nutra Drops (http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre.....516-449-4698) You can substitute 1 tbsp Infant Vi-Daylin drops plus 3 tbsp Karo syrup until you can get the Dr. Millers. Tube feed this formula every 4 hours and put baby back with momma and encourage her to clean baby up and stimulate him to pee and poo...that strengthens the bonding between momma and son....but watch to be sure she does this. Between you feeding baby, be sure he is trying to nurse...his sucking is not strong enough to successfully nourish him, but practice makes perfect!....if he is not gaining weight tube feeding every 4 hours, increase it to every 3 hours....this is around the clock feedings. You should be able to get him turned around after a couple of weeks. Good luck and hang in there....this baby needs you! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 11-03-2013 at 11:03 PM. |

| Yorkiemom I seen a post from you that had that recipe and he has had 1 cc every 2 hours for the last 12 hours. He has went from 1.75 oz to 1.85 oz. Only down side is his momma is getting nervous and we had to move them to a different container to make her feel better. I hate to keep him away bc he still tries to nurse. She keeps trying to move them and I resorted to napping in the floor beside them to know when she is moving them. |

| The few things that give me hope about him is Dixie doesn't push him away and he tries to nurse. |

| Dixie and I could not agree on a location for the puppies until about 3:30 AM got back up at 5:55 AM to feed the little guy again and his after feeding weight was 1.95 ounces. today we are supposed to be getting the tails n dew claws done but I'm not sure about him. What's the advice on this? |

| You are going to loose a lot of sleep over the next several weeks. Just resign yourself to this.....I keep all my mommas in a crate at the foot of my bed,,,,,no other dogs are allowed near momma and the babies. Make sure she is confined and can NOT pick her babies up and move them .......you are right, it is a good sign she is not rejecting him.....it becomes MUCH harder to pull them thru if momma gets uninvolved. The mommas will make you crazy when they get restless and start picking babies up and trying to relocate.....I just spent 6 days after my Skylar had her litter, with my hand in her crate soothing and talking and singing to her....and tube feeding her tiny little runt every 2 hours around the clock, for 3 weeks, to keep that baby thriving.....he turned completely around and became the largest of the litter when they reached 9 weeks old! Skylar was very nervous, and she also kept trying to relocate her babies. You just need to soothe and keep her calm, encouraging her to stay put.....trust me, I know how crazy this makes you! You just keep laying her down, petting her and soothing her....I have a box in my crate that I call a whelping cave....it is open at the top, but it has an opening on the side for her to get in and out of the box.....when I open the top of the crate, I can see into the box to access the babies and her, but when I need or want to, I close the crate and cover it with a sheet....she is secluded in that cave, inside that crate, away from all dogs and noise and confusion and activity, beside my bed.....she will eventually get used to what is going on, and she will calm down and stop trying to relocate.....keep encouraging her to bond with this baby....make sure you have the babies out of drafts and the ambient temp where the babies and mom are, is around 88*. When I take my baby out to feed it, I do not let momma realize I am removing baby....I kind of distract her and slip baby out to another room so she can not hear him cry.....quickly take baby to the kitchen where you will tube feed and then quickly return baby to momma.....I will distract her with stroking her head with my right hand, while I slip baby back in with her....after you get baby back at her side, allow her to nuzzle baby and lick and bond with him. I always take my finger and dab a little formula on babys mouth when I place him back with momma...she smells this and she will clean him up....she feels his full tummy with her tongue as she licks him, and she will pee and poo him....it is going to be tough for you over the nest several weeks, but it is so worth it when you are successful! And if God decides He wants to take that little soul back, YOU can be confident and assured that YOU did indeed, do everything you could have possibly done to pull that baby thru.....YOU did not fall short with any attempt you made, it just was not in God's plan to leave that baby with you. You should feel very proud of yourself..... |

| Yay Yorkiemom1 to the rescue, Thank you Judy! So happy Chip has gained weight, hope he continues to thrive! My Momo has dewclaws & his tail, the person I got him from never docked it. My vet thinks it's bc he was too small, when I got him @ 8 weeks, he was only 14ozs. This was b4 YT & it was a situation where I needed to get him out of there (or maybe that was my excuse to 'save' him). A girl was selling him 'for her uncle' & her toddler son was throwing big toys @ them, there were 2 yorkie pups, including Momo. Anyway, I love his 3" tail, so expressive but his dewclaw did get ripped off when he was playing w/a ball under the sofa, must've got caught on the sofa or berber carpet, not sure. Never found the dewclaw nail, but it grew back.
