Getting close to due date My little girl is getting close. She is 50 days into it. I am trying to find out all the information I can. I have watched so many birthing videos. I hope I have all the information. I have her whelping box ready in a corner of my bedroom along with blankets and puppy pads. It is in a corner between 2 dressers. Plenty of room for me to sit in it but also to make it like a little den. I have her eating some Royal Canin's Mini Starter and also feeding her a milk replacement supplementer. I spend a lot of time just watching the puppies move. I am so excited and nervous. I hope I am getting everything done. I would love any advice anyone can give me.

I keep my basket with all my whelping supplies, right there. After we xray and I know how many babies we are going to have, I will set up a "sterile tray" to work from. I have my dental floss already cut into a long piece at least 12 inches long! (so you are no fumbling around, all excited and shaking and nervous, trying to tie off umbilical cords with a 4 inch piece of string!). I have my sterile scissors, to cut the cord AFTER YOU TIE IT OFF NEXT TO THE BABY....I cut the cord about 1- 1.5 inch long....not too much longer, you dont want momma trying to shorten it!...I have scissors to cut the excess ends of the dental floss off...be careful you dont cut your knot you just made in the floss! I have sterile gauze "sponges" that I buy from medical supply store...they are great for grasping the slippery baby, and breaking open the sac so baby can breathe, and briskly rubbing baby to make it cry! It is very slippery, you dont want to drop it! I have my bulb syringe right there to suck out mouth and nose....I will allow momma to eat one placenta...maybe two, but that is all....it is necessary for hormones that she have at least one....supposedly this is where the hormone for bonding to the baby comes from, as well as milk production, etc....so she can have one, maybe two, but that is all! I put the baby immediately in with her so she can do the majority of cleaning the baby off, important in bonding too.....I am trying to visualize my tray while I am here at work so I dont forget anything....are you going to have an assistant? It goes quickly if you have an assistant hold the baby for you to tie the cord off....After I clear the nose and mouth and the baby is breathing and whimpering, the cord is cut and I am about to put baby with momma, I give each newborn 0.03 cc of Dr.Miller's Pet Nutra Drops. It stimulates them to nurse and they will suck it from the syringe...it is a great boost for the stress of being born and arriving into this whole new world! You can order it on line...it is super stuff and I always have it on hand for any stressful situation...keeps sugar levels on even keel, has vitamins, just good for them!

Absolutely lynzy!!! Roxy, you should be in communication with your vet and HOPEFULLY, she has given you her number to contact her if you get into trouble with the whelping....otherwise, you are going to have to go to an emergency clinic...better know the way there...make a dry run BEFORE you need to and know what type of payment thay require...usually, you just throw your credit card up on the receptionists desk and they start adding the charges as they come!.....here, it runs a minimum of $1800.00 for c-section, and then more charges for anything they do...like O2 for the babies, incubator fees, resusitation fees if necessary, any meds or IV fluids, etc.....

| Why are you giving her a milk replacement supplement? You should not being giving calcium to her before birth as it can cause eclampsia. You give calcium after birth to prevent eclampsia. Once a pup is out and you've cut the cord and dried it, try to get it to nurse. Nursing will stimulate contractions so the next pup can come. Make sure all placentas are accounted for, you don't want a retained placenta. Most importantly have your vet number on hand in case you need them.

I had her on the supplement because she was shaking but that was a few weeks ago. I had her on it then ran out about a week ago. I just got some today but I will stop giving her it. So no X-rays yet. I will probably take her in next week. I got all the information from the vet in case of an emergency. I am hoping it won't come to that. I was told since she is so small that she would only have one maybe two babies. She weights 5 lbs. normally. Today she is 6.6 lbs. So I don't know if that is normal weight gain. I thought it looked like 3 different babies moving today but maybe it was just ripples from one baby moving. I have tried hearing the heartbeats but don't want to press on her tummy at all with the stethoscope or even know where to put it.

I am a great beliver in "baselines"...when I take mine in for her xray/ultra-sound, I have them draw a calcium so I will know where I am at. After the babies are born and they go in for their well baby check, I have another calcium checked...so I know if I need to address that....you dont want eclampsia, if she is a good mommie, and she started out with a low normal calcium, with puppies nursing freequently and the litter being 3-5 babies, her calcium can deplete quickly...free feed that RC Starter, supplement with yogurt, cottage cheese, I give canned salmon 1/4 cup daily for additional calcium....and I keep (chicken flavored) calcium to give by mouth emergently if she shoulkd start showing any signs of eclampsia, before we head to the vet!

Question. It is really crusty by where she pees. I was going to trim the hair around it and noticed that the hair is stuck to it quite a bit with some crusty on the hair. Not a ton but enough to hold the hair together. I'll have to get a warm washcloth to try to wash it off but was not sure if it meant anything. She is super lazy today. Didn't even want to take the kids to school with me.
