Kas, you're literally playing with the life of your girl. As Mardelin said, her responding to calcium shows she's pre-eclamptic. She should have been at the vet's for assessment and to have a blood test to check her blood calcium, at the least.

For your information, Bailey is not ok. She merely responded positively to calcium, which, in itself, shows a problem exists. She will be prone to tiring out during whelp and having uterine inertia, which is absolutely life threatening to both her and the pups.

You mentioned not being able to drive yourself to the vet. I don't know your situation, but you best have someone available from here on out to take you to the vet with her at a moment's notice. Actually, though it's now after-hours, she should be seen by a vet now. You need to know her exact condition as I doubt this pregnancy will progress normally.

An experienced breeder would have already been at the vet's and would not take a wait-and-see attitude. With your obvious lack of experience, how can you justify what you are doing? You are in no position to assess distress in your girl and further distress is likely as you have already seen things are not going normally.

You are in over your head and have already been given good advice. It's your choice to heed it or not. Bailey's well-being and that of her pups is 100% your responsibility and your actions, or inaction, will determine the outcome.

I don't understand, I thought she was in labor. Why is the vet waiting for tomorrow to see her if she's been in labor this long with no results? Can someone drive you to the vet, a friend or family member? How is the dog now, is she OK?

You weren't prepared for emergencies.

Your vet said wait til tomorrow, then find another vet, because I wouldn't trust this vet to even trim my dog's nails, let alone perform a c-section.

I don't understand that you don't get it. Every experienced person on here (not me - because I don't know anything) has been on here to tell you how serious this is and that you should get your dog in to see a vet. Do you not understand???? This is an emergency!!!! Get your baby and call someone to get you to an emergency room vet - NOW!!!

I don't know how far this is from you but here is a 24 hour animal hospital. It shows to be about 40 miles or so away. Is there any way you can get her there???

Kas, I'm really concerned about your girl. You have been given excellent advice on this thread. I've also contacted you privately with my phone number and you told me you would call 5 hours ago but I still haven't heard from you. I also contacted a breeder in your state to contact you and offer support. Have you talked with her?

Trust me, experienced breeders will have way more experience with actual normal whelping than most vets. (The topic is barely covered in vet school and after school - unless they specialize - most don't get any practical experience with normal whelping - they do c-sections). The experienced breeders on this list are trying to help you and educate you on the fact that what your girl is doing is not normal and is putting both her life and her puppy's lives in danger. I'm sure you love your girl. Please listen to the advice you have been given and take her to the vet.

If your vet is telling you to wait till tomorrow , You Need To Find a New Vet NOW and get your girl to them. I promise you that these Breeders know more about this then your vet does. She's been in labour way too long now. PLEASE take her to the nearest ER.

I simply don't UNDERSTAND. You have been told time and time again, get your girl to the vet. If this isn't a Hoax. Then bundle your girl into a cab and GO NOW. Experienced breeders have told you what you are experiencing with your girl is ABNORMAL.

Her life is in your hands literally. If you were at all honest with this vet of yours explained the situation and told him that experienced breeders who you made aware of the situation urgently told you not to WAIT get your dog to the vet now, and he still said to wait. Fire HIM or HER>

Go directly to emergency now!

And WTF you would feel the same way? Then take your butt off to the vet.

Why look at the SB thing cause you didn't know what was wrong with her? Reading that thread wouldn't give you any answers!
If it was my pregnant dog I wouldn't even be looking on the internet at all. (Of course all my dogs are spayed and neutered so I wouldn't have a pregnant dog)
I am unable to drive but you can bet your bottom dollar if any of my dogs needed vet care I would be on the phone to the nearest cab company.

I wouldn't even be thinking of reading message boards.

I'm not sure if the OP knew if there were actual contractions earlier or not. I am sure that she is pre-eclampsic, though, due to Bailey's symptoms yesterday and today and with her responding to the calcium. Her not being able to stand should be reason enough for anyone to get to a vet pronto.

I haven't seen mention of how old Bailey is, her size, her due date, whether an x-ray was done....so much we don't know. Are the pups moving, what's her temp, any discharges? How's she been eating, any signs of hypoglycemia....dehydration?

Just from what we know is cause for alarm. There is a very low probability of this pregnancy going normally. This girl should be seen by a qualified vet now and be under their care through delivery.

Please pay particular attention to item # 3 under "Signs of Whelping Trouble".

I'm not posting this to in any way help coach you through this, but only for you to recognize that your girl has already shown signs of distress (low blood calcium) and this will affect her whelping. Her showing some improvement after taking calcium should tell you that her calcium was low and a few tablets aren't going to 'fix' this. Expect a problem whelp and a very high chance of you having to hand feed these pups....and count yourself lucky if it works out that well.

I can't repeat this enough....Bailey needs to be under a vet's care NOW!!
