Actually the Yorkshire Terrier History written on YTCA's pages says facts concerning the breed are well recorded starting in 1846. They were not given their current name until 1874. Not sure what that has to do with anything though. So, you have read a little history. Read more of it on the YTCA.org pages.

I don't know who you think have been led to believe what -- but I do believe there are GOOOD breeders and POOR breeders. There are also up and coming breeders who are doing things right to the best ability but are also learning on the job -- the last and most important teacher -- experience.

The Yorkshire Terrier's gene pool is being seriously diluted by puppymills and BYB who will breed any two breathing animals. Just because they are able to does not mean they should. Too many are not taking the Breed Standard into account at all! You yourself said you looked at LOTS of litters of puppies before you found one to buy? Why do you think that is? It is because all breeders are not doing it right. Of course we feel only certain breeders can breed quality pups!!! Only the ones who care enough to do it right!

Tell me about it! Bruce always said when I was about to talk to my mother on the phone that the closer I got to the phone the stronger my accent got (and it used to be a strong northern English accent) - or if I was talking to cousins in Wales, my Welsh accent came out. I think the offending party that got suspended per it staying by her name, probably a good thing sour grapes is all I can say from what I read in this thread and I read everything!

I don't know about Vice President, but I know I'd give my eye teeth for one of Mary's pups...sight unseen, even if I don't always agree with everything she says her passion for her dogs clearly comes through and that's why I believe she produces quality Yorkies (& would give my eye teeth for one!), which I'm sure is reflected in the price as it should be. Mary clearly goes above and beyond for the good of her dogs and that costs money, she should definitely be able to make back & more what she puts into her dogs. We should all be so lucky to have one of her pups.

I do think a person's locale dictates the price of Yorkies. Generally, speaking in my area Yorkie prices are from 900 - 1500. I just happen to look in the paper this morning and saw one offered for $500 -- my first thought was 'I wonder what's wrong with it?' Probably not fair of me, but that's what I thought.
My dam and the sire are about 5 5. pounds each. I know both the owner of my dam's parents, grand & greatgrandparents, the sire owner has all the info on her line (multi-generational champions) and has followed her pups after sale, none have been over 5 1/2 pounds (as adults) with the exception of one that ended up being about 8 pounds. Expressing my concern my dog threw one big pup, it was explained that sometimes one off standard pup just pops up and to sell him cheaper if he continues to stay big. They all got their checkups, tests, shots this weekend so I know even if he goes to 8 - 9 pounds he's going to make someone a great lovable and healthy Yorkie (just a little bigger than average)...so if I do offer him "cheap" I wonder if someone will think there's something "wrong" with him. I can't help but wonder if he will even stay big, as Mama dog always 'favored' him a bit, he's a chow hound and was always nursing...mama was his pacifier! He's the first one at the feeding bowl too. He might just be a "porky-yorkie" His weight has stablized though I don't know what all that means.
hmmm, I think my post went "off - post" sorry. Just thinking about the pricing structure of Yorkies and if offering one cheaper because they won't be to "standard" the way it's done.

I can't answer your question, but I agree the locale does make a difference, and I've noticed some of the breeders at Yorkietalk say that they can't get more than $300.00 for a dog where they live, but they sell them on YT for much much more, not including shipping. They try to price themselves comparable to responsible breeders who've been breeding for years and have paid their dues, meaning they've gone about it the right way. So when you buy online, price can be very deceiving of the type of breeder you are supporting.
