post whelping diarrhea and vomiting..please advise My baby gave birth 48 hrs ago, developed vomiting and diarrhea yesterday. Mom has decreaed appetite, vomiting and diarrhea little better today but persists. Took her to the vet and they gave her some sub Q fluids and abx shot, but other than mild dehydration they said she was fine. She still acts normal but has no interest in her kibble- solid gold and no interest in her canned food= avoderm puppy with chicken and rice. She has been eating her scrambled egg every morning. She turned her nose up at yogurt with karo, and carrots and treats that she normally loves. She ate baby food meat at the vet. She isnt much interested in drinking much either. other than her apprtite and the vomitting and diarrhea she acts normal. Any suggestions?

Do you have any Nutri-cal on hand? If so then I would be giving her Nutri-cal periodically. If you don't have Nutri-cal then you can mix up some corn syrup and water and give her a little of that. It helps to settle their stomach. You will need to keep offering her food and hand feed her for awhile. Did the vet give her anything for the vomiting and diarrhea? A little pure canned pumpkin will help with the diarrhea. Are you monitoring her temperature? Make sure she does not start running a high fever. If she is not better in the morning then I recommend you take her back to the vet. Is she nursing her pups?

she is nursing the pups and they are gaining weight. she has not thrown up since the vet this afternoon. only one episode of diarrhea since then. she vomitted 4 times today and 4 diarrheas, last one right after the vet. She ate a half a porkchop that i cooked for me since my post but really is not interested in fluids. I am offering fluids every 1-2 hrs and am at the point I am considering syringe feeding the fluids...pumpkin? Have you ever had a yorkiw who had vomiting and diarrhea after childbirth with no appetite. I know the afterbirth can cause it, but this is ridiculous. It was worse yesterday. She still acts normal other wise. her temp is 101.9 and not elevated. I'm wondering if this is a normal complication and how long it lasts.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Get pure pumpkin in the can..not pumpkin mix. Just look and make sure it is just pumpkin no spices.

I have fed her by hand and by bowl..at one point I had six bowls in her play yard. peopel suggested cottage cheese, yogurt with karo, canned food, scrambled eggs (which she will eat in the am), She basically sniffs it and turns her nose up. She normally bites my finger off to get a carrot. I sat and ate carrots in front of her and gave her a couple of pieces and she had no interest. I'm exhausted after no sleep for 3 nights and would give anything to have her eat and drink like the pig she use to be.

I let the rice sit in extra water from boing it so it soaked it up and mixed a 1 inch cube of the left over porkchop in it. She ate about and 1/8th a cup. She still is not interested in fluids, but at least it was a start. She hasnt thrown up for 4 akmost 5 hours now and has not had but one liquid stool in the same time frame so maybe it is the turn around point. Keep your fingers crossed. I have no problem hand feeding her whatever it takes. It is the fluids that bother me now.

Did you let her eat the after births? That can make a bitch very ill. I NEVER let them have them. I'd watch the diarrhea and vomiting to be sure that's stopped. And entice her to eat with good food that won't give her loose stool again. This isn't the time to MAKE her eat her dog food. As the demand on her body from the puppies increases she'll start eating again. I also always give the bitches liquid calcium while they're nursing. But please remember that you can never give calcium while a bitch is pregnant. That will cause eclampsia.

It is not advisable to give a female extra calcium during pregnancy. Once the pups are born a calcium supplement is advisable but their are a few exceptions to the rule. A small number of females can get pre-eclampsia so in those cases the female would require calcium during pregnancy. Females with larger litters definitely should be given a calcium supplement after the pups are born.
