Even if one alerts one to distress signs....you can't explain every situation, as every whelp is different and comes with it's own set of problems. Yes, problems, because smooth sailing text book whelps are not the norm.

| Ten days out from delivery is much too late to begin asking questions. With you being a member here for 3 years, I'm surprised you didn't make use of the resources here long before now. The others are right in that there just isn't time for you to prepare yourself properly. What you must do is prepare a whelping area for your girl and get your supplies ready. The link posted earlier is a good place to start preparing. You really should see a vet and get her x-rayed so you can know how many pups to expect. She is far enough along now to get a good view. Don't delay with this. Also, it's likely your vet will be the closest you will find at this time to a mentor so make that appointment now. If there's anything in your favor, it's that you have a big girl. They typically are stronger and may have a better chance of fewer complications, particularly with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia since her larger size gives her more reserves to call on as the pups deplete her with their pre-natal growth and nursing after birth. There are no guarantees, however, for a problem-free whelp or complications after. Don't let anyone tell you to just be there for your girl and let her handle things. At a minimum, you will need to intervene to tear the sacs, cut the cords, clear the pups airways, dry and stimulate them to get them going. Do not let the Mom cut the cords as she could easily injure the babies. There was a recent thread where someone let the Mom do the cords and she chewed a pup's foot off. Many Moms get too aggressive and these little ones just can't take it. I truly hope your girl has an uneventful delivery and that the pups all thrive. You cannot leave it to chance, however. In the little time you have left do all the research you can, see if you can find an experienced breeder near you to help and see your vet ASAP.

| WOW ... you people are abusive. And you wonder why I didn't ask any questions before this. If you looked at the answers you all gave me, makes me believe all you care about is if I'm going to get papers from the AKC for the puppies. To tell you the truth .... I really dont care whether I get papers for these pups or not. So, you can all relax and retract your claws! FOR ME .... it's NOT about money! You all make it sound like this has not been going on for hundreds of years (animals having babies)! All of a sudden its become rocket science! I'm not minimizing it BUT come on people ... I'm a pretty intelligent person and YES I can pick things up very quickly. None of you even asked whether I have done any research prior to this message. You all just assumed I had not. Well, let me answer that one for you ... I have. Maybe if you all were a bit nicer instead of ripping me apart, you would have got that! There were MAYBE 1 or 2 people on this site that really cared enough to reply to me with something otherthan NEVATIVE comments. I do want to thank those 1 or 2 people -Thank You very much for you help! Have you not learned the very old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, DON'T say anything at all". Maybe you need to learn it! I am VERY discussed with the people on this website and probably won't EVER be on it again. Not that any of you really care! I think that all you people that replied to me with such NEGATIVE comments, maybe should be taken off this site, so people would not be afraid of asking questions. I thought this was supposed to be a site you could go to for answers! Well, that's my 2 cents ... PLEASE don't reply to this message, cause I really dont want to know what your thoughts are! Thank You! |

| What I will say is this is a public forum and your request of telling no one to post isn't your right. What advise was given to you was based on fact, whelping is not something you just do. Those that responded to you stated it like it was, no sugar coating. No one was abusive, just telling it like it is. But, I will say is that your allowing your girl to get pregnant without any knowledge is a form of animal abuse. "You" have put your girl's life jeaporady and you alone are responsible. .

| No, you are right, for you it's not about the money.....it is about your dog being a mother just once so she won't miss out on that amazing experience. You are bringing more mutts into the world when there aren't already enough 'yorki-poos' out there. So, what are you going to do with these precious mutts? Will you give them away? Sell them? If you sell them, how much will you ask? Do you plan on breaking even or making a little cash off of the 'designer' breed? Yea, I am being a smart butt.... Also, if you really did do some research on the subject you would know that you cannot have an AKC mutt and register your mutts with any reputable organization. If you did your research you would know that the number of swollen teets does not equal the number of pups. If you did your research, you would know what labor signs to look for. If you did your research you would know she needs an x-ray so you don't miss any pups. I am not experienced in breeding mutts or pure-breads. I have only helped birth 7 kittens in my life and they came from a stray cat. I know that I will always have my dogs fixed no matter how much I want them to go through the pain of labor and the stress of birth. I'm sorry you weren't hugged an congratulated on your AKC mutts. I am sorry you got your feelings hurt. I am sorry you are not truly prepared to help your dog give birth. Good luck! I hope you have some adorable babies!

Hopefully you recommended another dog forum site where they'll sugar coat everything for those who chose to do things their way vs the way with an animal's welfare in mind.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Wow~ You asked the questions, you got the answers. If you didn't like them, that seems to be more your problem than the persons answering, IMO. And FYI- you were the one who asked about getting AKC papers. It wasn't brought up out of the blue by the responders.

In addition if the OP was so concerned about the welfare of the female; Original Post on the 10th and didn't come on again until this afternoon.......Speaks volumes.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Bah Humbug to this thread. Member prox 3 years done none of the reading on this forum? Did no research (easy enough) to goto www.akc.org and you will find the rules about registering dogs with them. No apologies sent this way... to you. I suspect this post was only to stir the waters. Well you caused a ripple. If you have a pregnant female, and Do Not have a mentor, then talk to your vet now. They are your best source of information at this late date. But if you'd like go ahead and let your female rip off the cords, wash or not the pups, lay on them or not, that is how it is done in the wild. Can you honestly sit by and watch your female rip off a foot with the cord?, let a baby expire in it's sack? You-you were not attacked. You were told in language that was clear and forceful to do the things you need to do to safeguard the health of your bitch and her puppies

However, as the original Poster said that wheping is not rocket science, we make it more complex than what it is. If that's the case, no questions needed to be answered. I for one find it very difficult to assist a Backyard Breeder....only to help them in continuing bad breeding practices where there dogs continue to suffer under their enept hands.

Agree 100%! To the OP--the question you asked are very elementary ones in regards to the breeding process as a whole. That is what gave the impression that you have not researched. Unfortunately for you, this site is full of people who look out for the best interest of the DOGS first, and your feelings second. You will get a wide variety of answers and opinions when you ask almost any question. You need to either be prepared for answers from all ends of the spectrum, or refrain from asking the question altogether. I find it ironic that you came on here, a week from your girl's whelp date asking very basic questions, yet those who answered are the ones being abusive. | |
