| Yorkie Ears I wasn't really sure which topic to put this under. My little girl is about 5 weeks old her ears are not standing yet but they are springing. Is the common for all yorkies is she just too young right now or should I start trying to tape them? My other girl was 9 weeks when I got her and her ears never flopped at all. Thanks |

| 5 weeks is a little young for ears to be standing, she's probably still nursing mom...She has not been taken away at this young age, has she?! I wouldn't worry about it for at least another few weeks. You could trim the hair on her ears though, that will make them go up quicker.... Last edited by tjdmom; 06-25-2010 at 04:10 PM. |

| Are you sure she is only 5 weeks? She looks older, if it is the one you sent the photo of. Are you the breeder? |

| No I am not the breeder. The lady had 2 litters ones birthday was 4-15 the other 5-13. The other litter was clearly older so she should be 6 weeks I counted wrong earlier. How old do you think she looks? Do all yorkies ears flop until they are older? |

| some pups need to have the ears taped... many factors, even personality ... some are too lazy to stand their ears, and some have huge ears that will never stand , even with taping if the ears are way too big and heavy and have lots of hair it is hard to make them stand. Try to do the classic: Shave the tips of the ears on a "V" shape then use the tape... it works well , but if sometimes you need to do it repeatedly. XOXO

| Yes, some yorkies ears will not stand no matter what you do, since it is genetic and some will with help and others just always stay up. It really depends on the weight of the ears and the skin leather. To help the ears you can tape them once the ears have been shaved. You do not have the pup yet, right, since she is only 6 weeks old and should still be with the breeder till she is 12 weeks of age. The breeder should know about the ears and to keep them shaved and taped - at about 7 weeks of age. Here is a photo of one of my pups at 5 weeks of age and then the 2nd photo of one at about 8 weeks. You can see how the hair is off the ears in the first one and then only hair at the bottom of the ears in the 2nd photo. I hope they help. There are some sites out there that show how to tape the ears. |

| I have the puppy she weighs 24 oz. which I know it is hard to tell their adult weight but that charts to be about 5.5 lbs. Which is what I was wanting. Her mother is about 6/6.5 and her ears stood up. I didn't see her dad but was told his ears stood and he was smaller than the mom. I have been feeding her Wellness just for puppy and she is doing great! Like I said earlier she had 2 litters she had it written down that this was the older litter however they had been moved and the other litter looked the oldest 4 weeks on a 6 week old puppy makes a lot of difference. Thats why I am unsure her age. Topknot-Your pictures did help! Her fur is just not fluffy like the 8 weeks old yet and I did research other pictures and even Abby's baby pictures (my other yorkie, which weighs 5.5 lbs now) that is why I think her birthday was the 5-13 litter. I am going to wait a week and see how her ears are doing. If they are still flopping I think I will try to tape them. |

Okay, so you have the puppy at your home and she is only 6 weeks??? That is way too early to leave its mom!!! And she is only 24 oz! Pups should be about 2 pounds/32 oz. when going to their new homes. Yorkies pups should not leave their mom till 12 weeks of age. Yours is way too young to be without its mom. Your breeder should have given you a health package with its birthdate on it for you. Have you taken her to the vet yet to be checked? Last edited by topknot; 06-26-2010 at 08:57 AM. | |

| Your breeder should have given you a health package with its birthdate on it for you. Have you taken her to the vet yet to be checked? Did you get a health guarantee and it in writing? You should have. I would see if the breeder will take her back for you, just till she is older (12 weeks). She really needs to be with her mom longer. Donating YT 2000 Club Member | How much does she weigh? She looks a little older than 6 weeks to me. I would tape the ears to help them stand. Make sure you shave all the hair off them also. I have a thing about ears.. I worry about them all the time.

| My little one's ears were standing until about a month ago. He's over a year old. I had been having him groomed, but tried doing it myself for a while and because I enjoyed his hairy ears, I didn't cut them and they flopped. I took him to the groomer and told her not to shave the tops of his ears, but to cut the hair on them. His ears stood up. Now, two weeks later, they're flopping again. Do I have to have the tips shaved in order to keep his ears up? I really don't like the shaving and I don't mind a floppy eared Yorkie, but since he always had them up, I'm assuming that's how they should be for him. I feed him very good food, but lately, he's been eating soem fo the Wellness weight loss food I feed to my Australian Shepherd. My Yorkie is on the top of his weight and felt it wouldn't hurt him. Do you think it might be a dietary deficiency? Thanks for any help you can give. |
