...so true mardelin when yorkie's are involved you have to expect the unexpected and be prepared and i did alot of research and joined this group and met a lot of nice ppl i know dogs but when it comes to small dogs i was scared cause the stud i used she lost her female cause she never had an x-ray and when she had 3 pups thought she was done but 1 was stuck in her and yes she had the c-section and a hystrochomy lost the pup and the mother 24hrs later so i was scared and got my x-ray and know my chloe has 3 pups coming next wk..yes you do whatever you have to save your baby...

I'm surprised by your response. You come on a forum asking for help, finally get advice by one of the greatest breeders here and you take offense to it. Bama nor Mardelin meant anything they said in an offensive way. Spending every dime on our own pets is nothing compared to the type of care a mommy dog and her litters need. Besides, there's more to breeding than just money.

I hope you have a mentor close by. Reading books does not cut it, every whelp is different, even when breeding the same girl. A multitude of things can go wrong. Danger signs are multiple. Even the most experienced breeders have them. I hope your breeding pair were pre-tested. By the way sonograms/ultra-sounds should be done prior to the breeding taking place. To insure your girl can carry and deliver a litter.

The whelping is just the beginning, your work really begins after the litter is born. Keeping your dam healthy is the best insurance you have of raising a healthy litter. The first week after a litter is born is the most dangerous for the pups. You'll have no sleep. Then of course worrying your girl is eating, not developing mastitis, or eclampsia. Keeping the whelping area clean. Making sure your girl isn't compromised by parasites. Making sure that you keep her as clean as possible before putting her back in with her pups.

so tired of these type of threads. i wish more people would realize that breeding isn't about money, OR the "i just really wanted one of her pups" there's a lot more to it than those reasons and i'm just so sick of people who don't know what they are doing breeding dogs and then asking why things are going well for them. see this every day in a vet's office and it makes me SICK

I understand your frustration. For the life of me I don't understand. I read on here from people; we all have to start somewhere. I just have a problem with that mentality, you're taking the life of living creature in your hands. We aren't play dress up dolls. Prepare yourself. I've been doing this for awhile and believe me each whelp scares the h#@@@ out of me.

i understand that. if i wanted to be a breeder i'd research the he!! out of it and i'd apprentice for at least a couple years under an experienced reputable YTCA breeder in order to learn it ALL.

but here's the thing. i would NEVER EVER EVER want to breed baby Sadie. i don't want to do that to her beautiful body. i don't want to risk her life on my own hands that everything will be just fine and she'll live through it. i'm not OK with trying that out on her. her life means more to mean than some people's do. (that's saying a lot) i would never live with myself if i ruined her life or mine by breeding her. but that's just me. i'm not into breeding for "i want a puppy from her" i think breeding for pureness of the breed and show is amazing and i defin. respect those that can do it. but breeding just for the he!! of it is stupid, ignorant, and animal abuse if you ask me. you should know what you are doing or not do it at all.

ok i'm done everyone has bashed me enough for today and everyone has got me wrong i did it for the experience and to keep a pup but i research did i say books no as even though i wanted to be a vet i know a lot about animals and whether you want to put your dog through this or not i don't give a damn i heard of ppl bashing never seen it but i saw the vet prior and got x-ray to make everything is ok she is my baby my god ppl read what ppl have wrote before you bashed and think you know what they r say when you don't have a clue go get your eyes check geez my god can't believe some ppl's nerves...i'm done

Wow.... nobody bashed you. Well maybe except RachelandSadie (love you girl but you did come on strong). If what you wanted was for people to applaud you in your inexperience, then you are asking us to look away as you take a risk with a living being. You want bashing? Well I'm sorry that you feel "bashed" , but you asked questions in a public forum, it was very unclear just how much vet care you were getting for your bitch, and your experience in the breeding of dogs seemed to be limited.

To breed any dog, for the "experience" is not a concept that will go over well with the many dedicated and experienced breeders here. Go skydive, or scuba for experience, don't risk the life of a beloved dog for "your" experience.

So you saw a vet and got an Xray to be sure she was okay. Did you do all the recommended health checks on her? Was the sire health checked as well? Is she and the sire a good representative of the breed? What about their lines? What is the health of the lines like? Incidence of LP, liver shunt, PRA, hip or elbow dysplasia. Are you aware of all the health concerns of yorkies?

i'm sure glad your done with breeding.

I'll disagree with you on RachelandSadie being a bit strong. I just don't understand why people don't get it that while this forum is for information and socialization. It really is about the love of the dog. And breeding a dog just to obtain a puppy is not the reason to breed. If it isn't done with the idea for the betterment of the breed, it shouldn't be done. Research doesn't mean talking to a few people and reading a few books. Research is learning the standard inside and out. Attending seminars/classes on canine genetics, pedigrees, lines, canine reproduction and whelping. Breeding the best of the best, not just putting two dogs together. It takes years of studying to do it correctly.

Yes - that is true. I can only hope all goes well, and that pups and Mom thrive. I also hope that she is done after this whelp with breeding.
