I take her to the vet on Fri. to see how many puppies she has. I'm thinking 4 or 5. She seems really uncomfortable right now. Poor baby.

Tammy, I think I agree with this................if Livi is that close and really gets that stressed out about it, I think I'd just hold off on the xray at this point too if I were you. You're going to know how many there are before to long anyway. I'm praying for and wishing you (and all the January litters to be) a safe whelp and lots of healthy babies and mommies!

I don't think that we will get the x-ray this time. Makes me nervous to not have an idea of how many or the size of them, though. But ya know, we were told 3 puppies last time and the vet also said how large they already looked....guess what?! There were 4 puppies and they were only 2oz. at birth and that x-ray was a week before they were born...so imagine how tiny they were when he said they were large. :rolleyes: I don't think that I want to stress Livi out with being this close to her due day. She has done so well this week and has been calm and eating great so I am not going to do anything that might upset her.

Can't believe that we only have 3 more days! :eek: Same with Destiny...she's due the same day. How is she feeling?

I know what you mean about the x-ray. Destiny's last x-ray showed 4 puppies, she only had 3 though.

Destiny is getting more restless each day. She's been digging a lot today and her breathing seems to be heavier. Her milk is in already and her tummy looks huge so I'm thinking the puppies have dropped. I just took her temperature and it is down to 99.
So I don't think it will be too long before pups start coming but she could surprise me. Tomorrow is day 58 for her. Her first litter she had them on day 58, second litter on day 61. I'm thinking by her progress she will have them early again this time.

How's Livi doing? Any signs of going into labor? Does she have her milk in yet? I sure can't wait to see her beautiful babies!! I will be praying for a quick and smooth delivery with no complications!!

It does sound like things are progressing with Destiny, doesn't it?! :) Livi has been just fine today....no signs of anything. She has eaten alot and has even played (very little, though) with Huckleberry. I think that she will hold off until her due day because she seems just fine at this point.

Good luck to you and Destiny! Keep us posted on her.

Breeding question
 
Hi, my name is Barb, and I just found & joined this group tonight. Have spent several hours reading threads. I have a question about the newborn weights. My two females weigh: one is 4 lbs 12 oz. and the other is 6½ lbs. My male is 4 lbs. In the two years that we've been breeding, we've only had two puppies that weighed 4.2 oz and 4.4 oz at birth. The rest have been in the 3 oz range and a several in the 2 oz range. Most of the 2 oz ones died. It just breaks my heart when the little ones die, and I do sit up with them, and help & comfort them when they are having the wee ones. What am I doing wrong, that they are so little at birth? The mommies eat well the whole time they are pregnant, and they are on a good quality dry food, with some good quality canned food, once every other day. I could really use some help with this. Thanks!

Hi Welsome to YT. I alwasys give mine cottage cheese and boiled eggs the last two weeks for the extra protein and calcium.

One thought. How many times do they tie and how many days between the first and last tie. Also how big is your stud. if he is real small you might need to use a larger stud.

Do you sit with the newborns and make sure the tiny ones are getting to nurse without being pushed off.

There are so masny possibilities.

You will learn a great deal on here, just by reading.

Hi Barb, welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am sorry you have lost some babies but sadly, sometimes that happens, even to the most experienced breeders. What dog food are you feeding? There are many things that could cause the problem so it would be hard to guess without a lot more detail. Size of litter has a lot to do with it sometimes. With smaller females and females with large litters there are concerns with crowding in the womb. Often one pup could be crowded in a position where he is just not able to develop normally. Care after birth is important also. A 2 oz puppy might not be able to nurse strong enough to get milk or he might get pushed off by bigger pups.

Hello, thanks for the info, I will give the cottage cheese and boiled egg a try. My male is 4 lbs -- they bred for about 7 days, whenever they wanted to! LOL!!! It was usually a couple times a day, each day!

First how do you reply to a message on here? I've been using quick reply, but then it doesn't end up on the message it's suppose to.
We are feeding a mix of Canidae, Solid Gold & Rachael Ray's dog food. They really love it!
Sometimes, the little 2 oz'ers are too weak to nurse. THANK YOU for the article! That sounds like it's going to be a life-saver {literally}!!! Going to print it out, so that I have it handy.

Forgot to tell y'all that we have 3 Yorkie pups that are 8 weeks old tomorrow. They are as cute as can be. This batch has the short nose and they look like teddy bears! Is that possible, when none of the others ever did? Well, DUH, yes, it is possible because it did happen LOL. I just can't believe how cute these are, never had the short noses before.

It is best to never let your dogs free breed and never more than once in a day. The male's sperm can live up 7 days in the female after she is bred. Letting them breed real often just dilutes the male's sperm. Letting them breed without assistance can result to injury to the male or the female if the female gets really wild trying to get loose when tied. I always keep the male separated from the female in heat except for the times I am breeding them. I always hold the female so she can't pull away from the male.

This might be your problem, some puppies might be conceived a week later than the others. It is best to only breed twice with as day in between, and then stop.

Also AKC requires that someone actually supervise each mating and that the dates be recorded.

Ollie has gained 1.4 oz since last night. She is definitely feeling rounder and I think I am hearing the heartbeat. Yaaayyyyyyyy so excited. one week to go.

Jeanie, I sure hope she is pregnant. I know you have been so worried with this girl's pregnancy. Are you feeling any movement at all? She might have more than a week to go if she conceived later.

Yes I guess that's possible. I think I feel movement. Due to as nerve disorder, I do not have much feelinging my hands but I think I feel it moving.

Thanks for the info about breeding. I do keep an eye on them, and record when I see them doing it. I didn't know it was better to limit them to the number of times. Figured as long as we were getting a decent amount of puppies that it was fine. Ok, so out of those 7 days, how many days do I let them?
