I would have been out the door to the vet with her but she caught us off guard. There were no visible signs of labor....just that her water broke and there was a pup's leg...no sac. I grabbed the baby's leg but Scarlett quit contracting and the baby went back up. This was a night time whelp so my wife went to get dressed after calling the vet to let them know we were coming. I stayed with Scarlett until she got ready then went to throw on some pants. While I did that, Scarlett had another contraction and the baby's legs were again presented. My wife grabbed them again and this time Scarlett contracted again and the baby came out. Wonder of all wonders, he was fine and this was about 7 minutes from the first presentation. We called the vet and stayed home for the rest of the whelp and she had no further problems but talk about an adrenaline rush...that was it!

I look back on each whelp and each one is different.....But, as I think back, I liken it to the Keystone Cops. Question, your wife didn't pull the pups legs did she?

| Mine usually whelp between day 61 and 63 of their 2nd breeding......Not sure if that's good....those extra few days, pups do get a bit bigger.....but, I guess that's a trade off for a healthy pup.

No, we didn't 'pull' the legs. It's more like just keeping a grip on them. Scarlett's second contraction (while my wife held the baby) pushed the baby on out. When I held the baby's legs earlier, she quit contracting so I had to release my grip. I had heard earlier that you can't kill a dead baby and for the sake of the Mom and the other babies, it's best to get that baby out but I couldn't bring myself to just yank it out. We had pretty much figured that first one was dead due to its being out of the sac but were very fortunate with the outcome. Had she not presented the baby again, we would have been at the vet's in about 20 minutes and I'm sure it would have led to an emergency c-section.

| I hope she has miscalculated. Maybe she'll post an update that everything has turned out good with mom and pups.

| One of my biggest fears is to have a small litter or singleton where the babies could grow too large. We just had our first singleton a month ago and that baby was only 3.5 ounces at birth...full term. Go figure....

My Tahlulah was in the horn without a sac for 3 hours while her brothers decided to come into the world first. She was born hind legs first, out of the sack with only the umbilical cord attached to her. Two days after the premature delivery, my Tahlulah had her first litter. At 3:00 in the morning she was in bed with me, I was attempting to calm her down. Anyway I heard a loud pop, and she began leaking, waited for contractions to begin, they did about an hour and a half later. Pup's head only crowned but could see that it was head up. Hubby reamed her with KY Jelly and assisted her with a warm wash cloth, by pushing her legs back when she had a contraction, once the head came through he gently turned it and out it popped, placentla attached. Second one was born without the sack but attached....3rd one was born (2oz) in the sack, hind legs first. All 5are 7 weeks old.

| Hello My sister logged on to YT asking for advise when I was on my way to Emergency vet. Izzie had a lot of green flluid and no puppy and I feared that the placentia was separating. Izzie had an emergency c-section, and had 2 little girls both were 4 oz, so I must have miscalculated. Only one of the girls survived, The little girl we lost had a very faint heart beat and a very distended belly, the vet says this is a sign that the heart did nt develope or the liver. when she tapped her belly after she died, it was full of blood. The other baby is being bottle fed since Izzie does not have milk yet, she did get an Oxi shot, so hopefully milk son. The baby is nursing on mom as well. Should I give her a taste of nutrical? I am so afraid of losing this baby too, and want to keep her strength up until Izzie's milk come. Thank you all for your prayers for Izzie and her babies.

| I am so sorry that this happened. I know it's hard when you loose a baby. I hope & pray that the other one does well. Hopefully Izzie will have milk soon.

| I am sorry you lost one pup but I am relieved to know mom and one baby are okay. Do not give the puppy Nutri-cal, it is not for newborn pups. They make a product call Nutri-drops that are for newborns. If you have the Nutri-drops then you can give the pup 1 drop. The best possible thing for the pup is nursing on her momma. Since momma only has one pup to feed then hopefully she will make enough for the little one to do well. The most important thing is to get momma to eat food. The pups suckling on the teats should help bring in the milk. Just make sure the teats do not get hard and impacted. You can give the momma a little of the Nutri-cal. Best of luck with your mamma and baby. |
