You're so right....each whelp is different and you can only trust your experience to guide you.

No, we didn't 'pull' the legs. It's more like just keeping a grip on them. Scarlett's second contraction (while my wife held the baby) pushed the baby on out. When I held the baby's legs earlier, she quit contracting so I had to release my grip.

I had heard earlier that you can't kill a dead baby and for the sake of the Mom and the other babies, it's best to get that baby out but I couldn't bring myself to just yank it out. We had pretty much figured that first one was dead due to its being out of the sac but were very fortunate with the outcome. Had she not presented the baby again, we would have been at the vet's in about 20 minutes and I'm sure it would have led to an emergency c-section.
