| Mommy question... I posted this on someone else's question and I probably should have started another one so here I go .... Is diarrhea common after whelping? She had them on Saturday and that seems to be the case though this morning she went and it was slightly "harder" but still not a "stool". Also, a week before she had the puppies her eye turned red and then it went away. Last night we noticed mucus in her eye and it was green but just slightly (so much so it may not even quality as green but definitely not white). Could that be an infection of some sort? We took her temp Sunday and it was 101.1, yesterday was 101.8 which I know is still normal. I guess if it goes up again, should I be concerned? |

| I would not worry about her temp unless it is 103 or higher...Then she should be seen by a vet...Also if she is having a problem with an eye infection you may not see a rise in her temp...I would call my vet and explain the condition to them...They may want her on something for this so not to give the babies an eye infection... I have had mom's with Diarrhea after whelping...Sometimes it is caused by eating placentas and sometimes I think the stress of whelping can cause this...I know when I have Mom's who refuse to go potty for hours they are more prone to Diarrhea when they do go...I give some canned pumpkin to them a couple times a day and it seems to help...

| They can have an eye infection (usually bacterial) that does not elevate the general temperature until it starts to affect the whole system (body). I would wipe her eyes with a little gauze and sterile water a few times today and see if the discharge returns. If so, I'd take her in to the vet for a check, she has enough going on and doesn't need the irritation of an eye infection. Loose stools is common after whelping. Coco had them for more than 2 weeks. I had her checked at the vet (and stool sample) and nothing wrong. Her body was still just adjusting. You can give a little (2 tablespoons) canned pumpkin -- not the pie mix, just plain pumpkin -- and see if that helps. But probably it will clear up on its own in time. Just be sure she doesn't dehydrate, nursing can be a real drain on their fluids. Good luck.

| Diarrhea after whelping is fairly common. One cause could be eating the placentas but another cause could be a outbreak of coccidia from the stress of having puppies. I always give my mommas and other yorkies Diarsanyl for diarrhea. I order it from Revival Animal Health. If the diarrhea is caused from coccidia then it could be passed to the puppies if they come in contact with the feces (if any is on mommas coat). It would take about 3 weeks or more before the pups would start showing symptoms. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. |

| She is doing real well. Drinking plenty of water and eating. She is being such a good little mommy. Feeds them when they cry and then walks around for half an hour or so while they sleep. I will try the pumpkin and see if that helps though like I said today's "stool" was better. They all have an appointment on Saturday. I will try to clean out the eye a little and hope it does not get worse before Saturday. Sound good? |

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | Have a stool sample to be safe, my first litter, Crick had diarrhea and when I called the vet they told me it was normal. Hers did turn into cocillia from stress and on the 3rd and 4th day I lost a puppy because she was loosing all the nutrician she was putting in. Once we got her on medication (we put the remaining two pups on meds too because by now it had gone thru her milk to them), then she was fine. Her second litter we had loose stool the first day and the vet gave me meds right away, but didnt end up needing them, she was ok. I think she was just so nervous the first time. |

| Yeah she has been doing real well. She is active, goes outside, things like that. It may just be me being overprotective or over cautious, this is our first litter ever and I just want to be extra careful with my little girl so I ask even when she winks at me I was given calcium pills by our first vet at her checkup in late May. Should I give her those now? I wasn't sure if I should or not. Also, if her blood sugar is low, what should I give her? |

| Not for nothing but you would think when I asked the vet these questions when I picked her up that he would have told me this. He didn't tell me to give her the pills or that she could have the nutrical too. Anything else I should know?? |

Most breeders keep a product on hand call Cal-sorb that can be purchased at Revival Animal Health. Cal-sorb is a fast acting calcium that could save your dogs life in case she does get eclampsia. | |

| I got the pills from our regular vet in late May. When my girl was having problems whelping I took her to the local vet because it is 24 hours/emergency and it is much closer than my regular vet. That website you sent says to not just add calcium. Is that based on the assumption that she is eating well and then all that is needed is calcium? My sister is home with them now and she says Luna is active (I heard her barking in the background) but like I said my sister is cautious too and called me when she saw the temp was 100. She is going to take it again soon (I told her to wait an hour and do it again) and I will let you know what comes up. Thanks for all your help. Last edited by trinity5098; 06-11-2008 at 06:52 AM. |
