No Longer a Member | [News] Big Dog Drama Unfolds Over Ownership Of NYC Yorkie Imagine losing your dog, then spotting it just a day later with another family. That's what one Bronx woman says happened to her. She even got arrested trying to get her beloved pet back. Big dog drama in the Bronx over a tiny Yorkie; two families are in a tug of war, both sides claiming ownership. One day after Yorkie Princess Ivy bolted through the front door of her families home, a similar looking dog wandered into a nearby Laundromat. Kylea Lester is convinced the dog captured in the Laundromat's surveillance video is Ivy. The surveillance video shows the dog going in and out, then a man, woman and a young boy leaving with it. "Now they're walking out with the dog. Yep, that's the dog," Lester said as she watched the surveillance video. Kylea's attorney and public defender, Jenay Nurse, is also convinced the dog is in fact hers. "It's very conclusive in my mind that this dog is hers," said Nurse. A few days later, Lester was arrested. She says she was just trying to take the dog back from a woman identified as Deneen Williams. To get to the bottom of it, CBS 2 went to Williams' apartment. Although there was no response from her, Lester's attorney says she can prove the dog's ownership with receipts from the breeder, vet bills and the micro-chip registration. Police checked the chip, but it came back to Williams. Lester's attorney says there's an explanation. "They were able to say the dog was registered two weeks ago and the registration changed," said Nurse. "She switched it from our names on the chip to hers," added Kylea. Police say the matter is an issue for civil court. (© MMVIII, CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.) |

No Longer a Member | Update:Fight Over Ownership Of Yorkie Continues In Bronx The fight over a tiny purebred pooch is brewing in the Bronx. One family, which lost the dog, says another family wrongfully changed her micro-chip registration, and refuses to return her home. Kylea Lester says it should be an open and shut case: a family dog lost in June, and then found by a total stranger in a Laundromat, all on video. "That's my dog," Lester said. But a street encounter with that stranger a few weeks ago led to a confrontation, which then led to harassment, petty larceny, and other charges being filed against Kylea. The 18-year-old says she was just trying to get her dog back, but now she's also trying to clear her name. "I was pushing just to get the dog back, and for the case to be dismissed," Lester said. Criminal case aside, attorney Jenay Nurse says the Lesters have a mountain of paperwork to prove the dog, named Ivy, is now living with the wrong family. "We want an outright dismissal," Nurse said. "We want them to admit they were wrong, that they arrested Kylea for stealing her own dog, that the ownership of the dog is not in question here." The Lesters have Ivy's original AKC papers, vet bills, and a matching serial number to a microchip implanted in the dog's neck. "We have tape to prove it, we have papers to prove it, we have tags to prove it," Nurse said. "I don't know what else they need." But records show a woman identified as Deneen Williams now has her name on Ivy's chip registration. On the phone she acknowledged that her daughter and son-in-law found the dog in the Laundromat, and in the following days paid for the chip re-registration after no one claimed the dog. Asked if her daughter would now be willing to return Ivy, given the Lester's original paperwork, she did have one condition. "They need to give my daughter her money back, and then they can have back the dog," Williams said. After taking another call, Williams got back on the phone and retracted the statement. "She's gonna keep that dog," Williams said. "We're gonna fight to the end." The Bronx DA's office, which is moving forward with its criminal case against Kylea, says its investigation is ongoing. Kylea Lester left court Friday with a host of criminal charges filed against her and a trial set for September 5th – but without her Yorkie Ivy. The Lesters say they intend to file a criminal complaint against Ivy's new family, while they wait for the start of their trial, to get her back. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Wow...that's crazy and I imagine quite frustrating. I didn't see any mention that the original owner had notified the micro chip company...that her dog was lost. Or is it...the dog gets scanned and then the owner is notified? Mine have avid chips....and I have paperwork that someone would need in order to transfer the registration. At least I HOPE they have to have the paperwork...doesn't sound that way in this case.

No Longer a Member | Whomever changed the microchip registration without contacting the owner is the person responsible for alot of this. It should never have been done. I am appalled they dont give the lady back her dog. They found it for christ sakes they didnt buy it. Goes to show you , your dogs arent safe even if microchipped. |

My lawyer wouldn't only be working on the return of my dog...there'd be some communication sent to that micro chip company too. That aside...I have often said...if someone wants to keep your dog...they will, regardless if it's micro chipped or has a collar with tags. It all still depends on their honesty.

| OMG, this is why my vet advised me not to put the chip tag on the dog. If you do, whoever finds your dog now has your dogs microchip number and can have the ownership changed. Without the tag, they would have to have the dog scanned by a vet or shelter. Maybe it's time for these microchip companies to come up with better security measures to make this difficult to do unless you are truly the dogs owner.

| Oh I didn't know about the micro chip tag. Mine are not micro chipped but I was planning on doing it next week. I can't believe all you need is a number to change the information. They really need to take more steps...like approval from the owner, security questions...etc and the tag shouldn't have the number on it. Couldn't they do just a tag saying that its registered but not include a number on it. OMG |

| I have the greatest idea! The micro chip companies should make the chips with a radio wave in them, like Lo-Jack that's installed in my car. This way when a dog runs away it can be tracked to who ever picks it up Could this be my success for being a millionaire They say you have to have a gimmick, this could be mine. Really it is something to think about. |
