Is oatmeal ok to feed dogs? If so do you prepare it the same way as for a human? Thanks..

Can this recipe be frozen in freezer bags for future use? I do a chicken stew that I freeze and this would give me variety.

Another recipe to add...I give Zoe dry during the day and homecook at night so I don't really measure the portions (and I know there's a huge debate about portioningin) or add supplements

olive oil
ground beef, chicken, or turkey or turkey breast peeled
carbs (brown rice or alternate with pasta)
veggies (brocolli, green beans, carrots, peas, spinach, or whatever I have on hand) + add 1 tomato
flavor with rosemary or other herbs
salt
I keep it semi stewy although their face gets really yucky with wet foods so I keep it on the runny but not so soupy side
I want to thank you so very much. My Jackson was not eating for 2 days like he was so tired of the same food. I switch the merrick can food and kibble and he was not fooled. I cooked this chicken rice stew for him that he used to love but he was not impressed. I was really thinking he was sick. You saved me. This easy to make recipe had him licking his bowl. I was even able to sneak so of his kibble in there. Thanks so much for sharing. Now my only question is can I freeze some?

I don't see why you couldn't freeze it. That should work just fine.

Default A "Birthday Cake" for your dogs

My husband and daughter have a side business here in the Cayman Islands, FuzzyFood and they prepare home made pet food several times a week and deliver it to the parents of furry kids either at their offices or at their homes. I decided that a special treat was in order when ever one of the babies had a birthday so I came up with mini doggie cakes. Basically I make a meatloaf recipe minus the tomato sauce as a lot of dogs can not deal with too much tomato and I cook them in mini muffin tins, then I frost the cupcakes with mashed potatoes. These are rich and so they are best used only as a treat and if you have a large dog then just make it in a square pan. People love this as a special treat, I melt carob and will decorate the "cake" with the dog's name and everything.

Another favorite that both the cats and the dogs like is "salmon cakes" we take salmon canned in spring water and shred it and mix in whatever grains, we usually use brown rice, and a few oats, add egg to hold it together, chopped spinach, grated carrots and we form them into patties and put them under the broiler until they are lightly brown on both sides and our customers love them to no end.

Here's another hint if you are going to make home made dog biscuits. Use your breadmaker through the dough cycle to do all the work for you! Then all you have to do is roll them out super thin, cut and bake for an hour or whatever the recipe calls for, turn the oven off and then let them cool down inside the oven. I do this with several recipes and I cut them out as heart shapes and dip one side in carob. Again this is just as a special treat but the babies love them and mom and dad are happy to give a high quality treat.

Hope some of these help

Roll out (about 1/4 in. thick) and cut with dogbone cookie cutter.

Bake on a greased cookie sheet for 20 min. at 375. Makes about 2 doz. biscuits.
Watch them carefully so that they don't burn!

DON'T KEEP IN CLOSED CONTAINERS RIGHT AWAY - NEED TO GET HARDENED!

I'm pretty sure that those of you who bake alot, could experiment with other flours.
I'm making this right now and it smells sooooo good!! It's easy to make too. Thank you!

Animal Smiley 019 YorkieDaze Recipe

I have not read every single post but I haven't seen YorkieDaze's recipe that she sent to me. I have been feeding this to my little guy for several months now and he loves it. I might have made a few minor changes but this is the recipe. Actually I cut this recipe in half because it does make a TON of food.
Here it is:

Find a REALLY BIG bowl or pot for mixing these.

Cook up 1 cup of brown rice together with 1/2 cup of split peas and 1/2 cup of lentils till crisp tender then drain and rinse in a colander

Cook 3 pounds of free range ground veal or free range hamburger . Add to rice mixture.

Then in a food processer, coarse grind 3 large fresh heads of broccoli with stems, 6 large fresh carrots and 3 cloves of garlic. Add to mixture. Mix really well and put in pint size freezer zip-loc bags and freeze.

I also make meatloaf for him. I can't give you exact measurments because I just guess as I make it but basically go by a regular meatloaf recipe.

I use free range ground beef, Quaker Multigrain Oatmeal...it has Oats, Rye, Barley, and Wheat (Poco is not allergic to grains), eggs, powdered milk. grated cheese, grated carrots, couple of cloves of chopped garlic. Mix it all together and form into tiny loaves or meatballs and bake. When cool, put in baggies and freeze.

I made "Leo's dog biscuits" last night for Charlie. I think he knew I was making something for him because he laid on the kitchen floor with DBF dog Feylan (border collie). The biscuits were cheap and easy to make. And I like knowing what is in what I'm feeding him.
Great recipe! Thanks for sharing. Does anyone know of a good doggie cookbook? (I'll check the thread again.)
