| Dehydrate Chicken Legs? I have some extra chicken legs and was wondering is it safe to dehydrate them for my pup? I'm going to remove the skin and take the meat off the bone then dehydrate. Is this ok for them? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Most people dehydrate the chicken breast because white meat has less fat, but I don't think the leg has that much fat, the thigh, on the other hand, has a lot of fat. I didn’t realize how much I had in common with chickens. When I dehydrate meat, I keep a weeks’ worth in refrigerator and the rest in freezer. Dehydrated meats keep longer than fresh, but it's still best to refrigerate them. You can keep a day’s worth out of the refrigerator safely.

| Thanks so much. I don't plan on doing legs again just thought I would this time as I had some in my freezer and I have grown a dislike for chicken legs myself and didn't want to waste them. |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Good idea. I am going to have to try it. Do you use a dehydrator or the oven?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | An oven works fine, you bake at 200 degrees and check after two hours, it may take up to six hours. I cut into 1/4 to 1/2inch cubes so it's fairly fast, the smaller it is the faster it dries. . When giving a treat think of the pre-dried size, otherwise you may end up with a fat pup! I do beef liver this way, and boil it first for about 20 minutes, cut it and then dehydrate it.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I read a recipe that said to do that, so I did it, but I really don't know. It might be because otherwise you would have to bake it too long, a dehydrator is more efficient than the oven, the rack helps dry the meat faster. A convection oven is a lot like a dehydrator and if you use rack where air can circulate, it might be almost as fast as a dehydrator. How long did it take the liver in your dehydrator?

Oh wow, that's much more efficient! I haven’t tried it in my convection oven yet, but in my old oven it took at least 2 hours. I know lots of people have raved about dried sweet potato chips, have you done those yet?

| Yes I have done the sweet potatoes. You have to peel them and cut to your desired size and then blanch them for a few minutes in the microwave first the dehydrate them. I can't remember how long they took maybe 8 hours that's just me guessing. Guess I will have to make notes next time. I even enjoyed eating those. my little guy went crazy for them. |
