| Allergie/itch control on a budget. Advice please? One of my little ones has battled allergies on & off for her 4 years. I believe I've identified food triggers but haven't licked (pun, sorry) the problem completely. When she has flare ups of itching & licking I'd like to try a few things & I'm wondering if anyone has used these with success: Fish oil: Can I take a capsule, poke a hole with a pin, & squirt this over her food once a day. How much should be used? Hydrocortisone: Can I use made-for-human cream? Or, better yet, is there a topical spray or something that wouldn't be so greasy? I've been using 1.5 ml of Children's Benadryl which helps (she's 3.5 lbs.)& I'm going to mix ground oatmeal added to her shampoo as suggested in this forum. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you! |

| The only itching problem we've had with Smokey so far is some dry skin. The vet prescribed a multivite containing fish oil, which I puncture and put on his food as you do. I dont think straight fish oil would hurt.. just get the smallest capsule made and a reliable brand. The vet also told me to limit bathing, which I dont do anyway. He gets one every 8 weeks at the groomers. My whippet had severe skin problems from time to time and ultimately, the only thing that helped was a course of wickedly expensive CLAVAMOX antibiotics made especially for skin infections and the dreaded cone collar. The doggie spa I boarded him at used some pump spray stuff called OXYMED Itch Relief, which was also pricey but worked fairly well. I used the OTC hydrocortisone cream, but honestly dont think it did much good. Steroids dont treat the infection, they only suppress the itching. What the vet prescribed was much more effective, a combination steroid and antibiotic cream but again, costly. I have used benedryl on all my BIG dogs (half the child's dose), but I dont know how much to use on such a tiny guy. Check with your vet or research the web. In retrospect, my whipped didnt have 'allergies' He had sensitive skin prone to bacterial infections which he exacerbated by licking and the only thing that cured the infections (for a while) was the CLAVAMOX.

| Peanut has really bad allergies. I have not been able to find out what causes it. I had him on wet food and took him off, that seemed to help but he was still itchy! I have been using these products on him for about a month now and he itches about 5% it has helped so much! I hope if you do try it, it works for you!! Plus everything I give him is healthy! I feed him dry food only now, but I will mix all the stuff in there. Take his normal amount of dry food. Mix in some Missing Link powder http://www.1800petmeds.com/images/pr.../10779_420.jpg you can find this at 1800 pet meds, petsmart, petco.. Mix in some Samon Oil http://s7d5.scene7.com/is/image/Pets...,0&iccEmbed=0& you can find this at 1800 pet meds, petsmart, petco. Mix in a couple coconut chips, here is the website you can search your state on where you can buy some.. CocoTherapy - Products I also give him some sweet potato. He has to take Cosequin for his LP, So I bake a sweet potato and he gets a little with his pill daily. That is what I put in his food, I also give him a bath with this shampoo http://s.petco.com/assets/product_im...091020752C.jpg I found this at Petco, it is a little $$ but it works so good! I let it sit on him as long as he will take it! Let me know if you need any help if you try any of these, I went months and months with dealing with an itchy baby so I know how you are feeling!! I am so glad my little project works on him!!

| Benedryl is 1mg per lb. But i give my two itchy dogs zyrtec and it works really well. But just so you know, you have to give everyday for sometimes up to 2 weeks before you notice an improvement. |

| Thanks everyone for the advice so far. I'll be trying different things as needed. The 1% hydrocortisone cream seems to be helping-does anyone know of a spray? |

| Itch I don't know what to try with Dora, she is always scratching, constantly, even in the middle of the night she will wake up to scratch. We have try shampoos after shampoos, conditioners, I have change her food, I ask the Vet and he ask if she had flees...I'm always looking on her hair and I did notice that her skin is kinda red all over, I don't know if that is the normal color or are they supposed to be more pink or what. |

Talk to your vet about using Zyrtec or Claritin - these are both 24 hour meds; where as Benadryl is supposed to be given 3-4x a day, which can be tough. Our Derm feels that Zyrtec and Claritin have better efficacy too. I like Ark Naturals Royal Coat for a fish oil - it already has the Vit E in it, so you don't have to buy add'l Vit E. It comes in a bottle, so no messy capsules. Allergies are very complicated....so I can't recommend highly enough that you see a Vet Derm. Sure, it's not cheap -- but I sure wish I'd gone to one right away bc I spend hundreds at my regular vet, which didn't help. Whereas the Derm was just wonderful, and such an expert at skin issues.

| my niece has shih tzu she got from her boyfriend's dad, the dog was constantly scratching, body odor *no matter how many times she washed the dog* the dog was uncomfortable, and sweat, I know dogs dont sweat but i swear they do lol, so they took her to the vet and he said the dog is allergic to her own body he put her on a white pill she takes half in the morning and half at evening and the dog is much better, no itching, body odor,etc.. I have asked my niece the name of the pill she just said its small and white. I will keep asking till i find out the name and if i dont forget ill post the name.. |

| Skin issues are always a "hot topic" I think. I went the other way. After 7 years of dealing with itching and doing all the OTC stuff, and regular vet stuff, I finally went to a Holistic Vet. And guess what? She doesn't think it is/was allergies...as the skin is an organ, it is also one of the most likely places that a body will try to clear "toxins etc" out of the body when the liver/kidney and other organs can't do the whole job. My girl is now on a home-made diet, with appropriate support for liver, pancreas and kidney function, and itching has declined over 90% with no harmful steroids needed. And the Holistic vet is actually cheaper!!! than my regular vet, and I've saved a fortune by not having to trot off to the vet all the time...she even will give advice over the phone when needed. All this to say...solving itching skin can be complex, but sometimes you need to really understand the cause and not just treat the symptoms. Because that ends up costing more in the long run. |

| We just went though a lot of itching and licking...finishing up a round of cortisone. I am going to try a homeopathic remedy and look for the MIssing Link Powder at Petsmart. Latte had fleas really badly and we've finally got a handle on it. I will keep her on good flea meds now for sure! I also wipe her paws with unscented baby wipes when she comes in of the grass. I think she actually likes it. I have used hydrocortisone cream-it's not too bad, but I didn't see much difference. As a person with skin problems myself, I sympathize and try to be grateful when the itching is down to about 10% of her day. |
